Can I cut my shotgun off
Am I O.K. cutting my barrel down to maybe 10 inches if it is kept in my home for self defense? I know the Fed. Limit is 18",but in my home what makes the diff.if I would defend my family with a 10" or 20" barrel?[?]

What do you hope to gain by a 10" barrel? You gain more muzzle blast and flash and incur the legal liabilities of having an illegal SBS. Plus, you lose shot velocity with a shorter barrel. The only real application for a SBS is in a CQB situation where you are trying to move in a confined area. The entry guns that you see are 14" which is long enough to develop door-breaching, thug blasting power but short enough to not get in the way like a full-size M1 would. If you are serious about a short barrel, get an AOW Mossberg or similar. They have to keep the pistol grip config, but they only require a $5 ATF tax and are completely legal. 0 -

All it takes is someone, your wife,girlfriend, or your buddy to get mad at you and make a phone call, then your goose is COOKED!
If you must have a short barrelled shot gun, do it legaly!
A AOW can be a shotgun with no stock, you can make it as short as you want. The ATF fee is $5.
A short barrelled shotgun, which means with a stock, will set you back $200 in ATF fees.
Do not cut the barrel until the ATF forms come back to you authorized by the ATF, then cut until you heart is content.

Listen to everyone...Don't do it! Lots of other ways to go. Get yourself a coach gun or go the other route.
Fed Law says the overall length of the gun must be 26 1/2 inches with the barrel being at least 18 1/2 inches. Don't go any less if you do disregard all our advice.0 -

Those of us in the Fire & Rescue Service often use forcible means to enter a home when there is an emergency, such as a fire. The police ALWAYS accompany us when we do so. This is the way it's legally done throughout the country. If the police observe anything illegal in the house, especially illegal firearms & drugs, charges are generally brought against the occupant.
Just because something is inside your home, that doesn't mean that you can ignore the law. You got good advice above; take it.

Bachman pawn was advertising in the gun list, Remington 870 police 3" mag with a pistol grip and a 14" barrel for $500.00 plus the $5.00 A.O.w Transfer. A little expensive for A 870, but cheaper than legal problems. 0 -
I have a Mossberg 590. That's a 20" barrel w/ 9 rounds. I use the factory pistol grip. Shot from the hip (I mean you don't really need to raise the gun to aim if your shooting across your living room), the gun protrudes about 20" from my body. That's short enough where I could walk down my hallway swing the gun 180 degrees and not hit the wall with the end of the barrel. That's good enough for me. Also watch your loads. You don't want to blast through a wall and hit your own kids. I am loaded with 7 1/2. As the other guys have said, if you must go shorter, spend the extra bucks and be legal. Think what might happen if someone broke in your place and you shot him with your (illegal) sawed off. The perp's family would have a lawyer on you before he was buried!

Why stop at 10 inches? Cut the daXX thing off just ahead of the chambers and really have something useless. Besides, you get a better smoke and light show that way.
Or consider this... Legality of a scattergun with tubes less than 18" goes without question. Ownership of such will make you the criminal.
Assuming you really need protection, then perhaps it's time to consider why the need. Lifestyle? Location? Associates? Family? What?
Maybe it's time to change.
And the tool of choice? Any good pump or auto is a fine choice. There's no actual need to cut a gun (other than what you've seen in the movies). The real deterent is the sound of the action slamming closed on an auto or the shucking of the pump as a round is stationed.
That and the huge round eye that an intruder sees as he looks at the business end of that scattergun... And by that time he's proved he's not too smart because the sound of the action should have sent him running for the next county in the first place.

Matwor, I believe that nmyers is referring to illegal objects that may be in plain view. Example, the fire and police enter a house on a medical emergency and in plain view on the kitchen table, as they walk through the kitchen to get to the living room where the medical emergency is occurring, there is a large pile of a white powder, scale and glassine bags. White powder is seized and it turns out to be cocaine. Arrest is made on a warrant and warrant is upheld in court as the seizure was legal. Same circumstances but an officer leaves the living room, for no apparent reason, goes up stairs and opens a closet door and finds a bag of white powder which is seized and later turns out to be cocaine. This example is a case of an illegal search and would be thrown out in court. The legal distinction is "in plain view"in this particular example. 0 -

18" is the minimum legal limit, if not a NFA gun.
Butt, forget the squabble over legal vs illegal searches.
Fellow gun compatriot in NJ is a lawyer specializing in firearms.
His minimum starting fee is $5,000....up front.
That is just the beginning of the hassles, throw in possible job/career loss, public embarrasment, family problems, etc, etc.
So, just to find out if it's too short, or if the search was legal pays off only the attorneys.
The Gov' has lots of stupid people working for it. Pockets that are much deeper than most of us.

The difference between defending your family with the 10 and 20 inch barrel is that if you pull the 20" barrel on trespasser using legal weapon for self-defense you safe, when you using the 10" barrel, you in trouble. Once u stat with the Feds you gone. Think for second: a guy gets in to your house and hold your wife at gun point you pull your 10" shotgun, first the shot goes everywhere and is good for no more than 20 feet and if you shoot him and then call caps the fist thing they gonna do is ask you where is the weapon and what you think you gonna show them your illegal shotgun. Read the previous response, 10 years in prison +fine no question. My friend build a silencer in home thinking like you, he had it for about the year until his neighbor got pissed at him for shooting the squirrels and called caps. In no time they got warrant to search the house. They got him for illegal production of silencers confiscated his shop worth at least 30 000$ or more and he got 3 years and thank God he got a good layer(cost him another (30 000$). Do your self a favor and get a Remington or a Mossberg police version or riot one. I got a 870 with 18? barrel with pistol grip and it serves me good. It is compact and it holds 8 shots.0
