This can get confusing without pictures and proper names but here are some quotes from the instruction manual. "The friction piece usually remains enclosed in barrel guide ring. Should it become separated when barrel is disassembled, replace it in guide ring before assembling barrel". What is called the friction piece is the split ring.It fits in the lower(breech end) of the barrel guide ring. The friction ring is the part with up/down instructions on it. It fits against the recoil spring. Up means towards the muzzle end. I hope this helps.

Remroc, Thanks much. I have it that the Friction Piece (split band) snugs up into the Barrel Guide Ring, but there is one more element in this one: a "flanged ring." I emailed Remington at their site for some help and haven't heard back from them yet. Does your manual show the order of assembly for those elements along the magazine tube?
Flanged Ring - flat surface which way?
    Recoil Spring
    Friction Ring
    Friction Piece
    Barrel Guide Ring
Since your quotation from the manual says the friction ring "fits against the recoil spring" (I'm guessing at the muzzle end), I suppose the flanged ring fits against the breech end of the recoil spring (but I wonder whether the flat surface of this flanged ring is against the receiver or the spring)
    Thanks a million. Best, Jim

tibroman- sorry this took so long but I have been out of town. I neglected to mention the recoil spring cap that you refer to. It is placed on top of the spring with the small diameter (the flange) up. The friction ring (the part with the writing) sits on top of that. In other words the recoil spring cap snaps over the spring.

Rem- That's perfect. It went together like a champ. Have it set for low brass shells and made a little diagram for future reference just in case one of us on this end forgets and I'll print this post to hang on to. From the receiver/breech along the magazine tube, we have:
    1 - Recoil Spring
    2 - Spring Cap
    3 - Friction Ring (writing)
4 - Friction Piece (split band)
    5 - Barrel Guide Ring
I do appreciate your patience and the information. Best, Jim
