refinishing wood

i just bought an old remington 270 and will like to refinish the wood. have a couple of questions. 1. how to remove the stock from the barrel. is it just a matter of undoing the screws on the trigger assembly and the other screw further down the barrel. 2. tips on refinishing the stock. 3. those of you who know about $$$ what will be the estimated price for the remington 270 w/bushnell banner 4x12x40 OA. the barrel has like 3 patents written on it can't load the rifle if the safety is on. rifl'e blueing is in good condition. the stock has several marks and the finish is coming off in some spots

  I'm not sure what the gun is worth but a brand new 4-12x40 banner sells between $100 and $125.

  Yes all you have to do is remove the screws under the stock and it will come loose from the barrel. As for refinishing the stock get a quality paint or varnish remover and follow directions when you get to the checkering use a toothbrush and clean all the debris from the checkering. Then use the multible grades of sand paper to get the desired finish then I rub in approx 10 coats of truoil and I spray on the last one.

  If you sandpaper the stock it is a good idea to do it with the butt cap ON. Otherwise the sanding will round the edge of the wood. This is a dead giveaway of an amateur refinish job. Keeping the butt cap on keeps a crisp line between wood and the metal or plastic cap. You can always touch up the edges of the cap if necessary. Hope this helps.
