Corrosive ammo problems?
How long will it take to start to notice the affects of corrosive ammo on your gun if you don't clean them and what would the problems that it might cause in semi-autos and bolts? And how can you tell if your ammo is corrosive? I always clean my guns I am just curious.

The corrosive effects wil be apparent in just a few hours depending on the humidity. There will be heavy rust deposits in the bore and pitting of the inside will take place very quickly.

D@D: After shooting this possible corrosive ammo. pull the slug and powder from a round and fire the primer at a cleaned steel piece of
metal at about 2 inches from the muzzle. Leave it till the next day or so. If it is pitted or rusted it is corrosive ammo. With proper
cleaning, namely old G.I. corrosive bore cleaner, or strong soap and
warm water no harm will occur. Hoppes # 9 etc. dont do the job on
corrosive priming. Billions of rounds of corrosive ammo were fired
from millions of '03 Springfields, M-1 rifles, handguns and machine guns prior to non-corrosive priming and with proper care they came
through it safely. BUT, dont put off the cleaning if its corrosive.
As far as the advertised "mildly corrosive", that is like being a
"litle bit pregnant".0 -

I once left a gun for 9 hours and light pitting in the grooves resulted, though a good scrubbing with JB bore paste minimized damage. Fortunately it was a $90 rifle. Now I take a jug of soapy water to the range with me and pour about a pint through after I'm done shooting, then dry. I haven't had any further trouble doing this, and when I get home I clean the rest of the way, again with soapy water then with Hoppes or other cleaner.

To answer the second part of your question; any place the gas goes,the corrosive salts will go and has to be properly cleaned. In gas operated semiautos like the M-1 Garand, AK47 and SKS that includes the gas piston, gas cylinder and gas ports. If you look at the bolt face of a pistol, rifle or MG that has been firing corrosive ammo you will see a ring around the firing pin hole. This is caused by seepage of gas around the primers that has pitted the bolt face. This also should be cleaned. 0
