AR-7?

Is the Henry AR-7 any count. I've heard some people say that they jam, is that right? I'm a coon hunter, and I'm planning on using this gun for hunting. This being the case I'm needing something that is light and versatile. What's your opinion?

  speaking as an NRA CERTIFIED RIFLE INSTUCTOR and an NRA DISTINGUISHED EXPERT(smallbore rifle) i would characterize the AR-7 as one of the most innacurate .22 rimfire rifles i have ever fired. i own one. its great for plinking, and to use to teach new shooters how to safely handle and fire a rifle, but is about the poorest hunting arm you could choose. it takes an expert shot(one better them me, certainly) to keep a dinnerplate sized group at 40 yds from a sandbagged benchrest. i have installed a 3-7x20 scope on mine, but with little improvement. if hardpressed to take game in a "survival" situation you could take rabbits or squirrels if you got close enough, but there are better shooting, more reliable guns to be had at a good(affordable) price. yes, its light, handles easily, is weather resistant, floats, and takes down and stores in the stock, but it would be my last choice to hunt with.best regards, mike.

  Had one of the older ones that didn't have provision for a scope.
  As noted the accuracy is terrible. I blamed the trigger, sights & the short stock but I now would also add the fragile reciever design. The rifle I had at least worked fine but the pistol version I had had absolutely terrible feeding & ejection problems.
  I've never tried one but I suspect the Papoose may be much better.

  I agree with the already mentioned... they jamb like they were supposed to do it. [;)] Mine was definately accurate enough to take small game out to 30 yards for sure, 50 maybe. Towards the end of me using it, I just used it as a single shot because it was easier to feed them one at a time than to unjamb it every time. I'd agree with the papoose idea, or better yet (in my opinion) get a pistol gripped or folder shotgun with a short barrel (if legal in your area) and put it in a watertight floatbag (if you are doing watersports).
  I think I'd honestly prefer my quality .22 pistol to an inferior .22 rifle.
  Also, don't forget that there are floating gun cases you could slip any rugged rifle into and you should be well protected.

  I own a AR-7. I like it, it is not a tack driver. But for a coon tree'd by a dog, looking up a mere 30-50 feet, it is fine. not great, but extremely light weight, and durable, as for jamming, mine never has.

  I own a couple of these. The original AR-7 manufactured by Armalite is a very well made little rifle, the fit and finish are fine and it has decent accuracy. All and all it works for what it was designed for. The next version by Charter Arms is no where near as well put together and it is very inaccurate and the sights are nearly worthless. I have been even less impressed with the later versions of this rifle and have never bought another. If you can locate an original Armalite I'd say buy it. Any of the others are strictly novelties- you'd be better served with a Ruger 10/22.

  I have a twenty-three year old Charter Arms AR-7 and I love it. It's a fun rifle. I don't know why but more than 50% of the time it fires two rounds at a time. That makes it very interesting.

  I have one with the retractable wire stock, it is defintely a great shooter. Only thing I had to do was file a little on the barrel so that the ejector could seat firmly in place, otherwise it would not eject. Easy enough to fix, It is extremely accurate with the standard velocity stuff, the high velocity stuff wasnt made for this paratrooper.

  RugerNiner, mine did that the first time I shot it. I got some new parts RIGHT away. They are not really a hunting quality rifle.
