Ruger Security Six Question

I just boughy a used Ruger Security Six in great condition. By the serial number it was made in 1978-79. I don't know much about the gun and would appreciate any comments.

    I purchased my Security Six new when they first came out back in the 70's I believe. The serial number prefix of my Security Six is 150.
    In trying to buy rubber grips for this revolver, I've found that Pachmayr & Houge (sp?) only offer rubber grips for Security Six models with a serial number prefix of 151. I bought a set of Pacmayr Grips not knowing this difference between the 150 & 151 prefixes & now I must return the grips to the dealer - they are too small and the countour of the grips do not fit the butt of my revolver.
    Can you tell me what the butt measurement difference is between the 150 & 151 models so I don't purchase the wrong size set of grips again?

    capecod, I bought a used Ruger 2-3/4" Stainless Security-Six recently, s/n prefix is 157-...mine has "square" butt, wood grips and the Ruger site was really helpful with manual, manufacture date, etc. They may be able to steer you in the direction of some original-type grips.     The serial number would be on the base of the frame--the Hogue rubber grip will be covering the number.

    I can't help specifically--I don't know what the differences in size are, but the Hogue grip might work as it "clamps" with a bottom screw and "wraps around" the grip/frame--if it were larger you might be able to trim some of the rubber/plastic to make it fit. You might try to find a shop in your area that stocks the Hogue; they'd probably let you try to fit it.

    Maybe someone can help you more specifically.

    My prefix is 153 and I have Pachmayr Presentation black rubber grips. They are a good bit larger than the actual handle of the gun. The inside of the grips read "RS6 RUGER
    service 6
    speed 6
    small grip"
    The bottom of the grips cover the whold butt of the gun and must be removed to read the S/N. Tom

    I own both the early(Large grip frame)Security Six(150 serial number prefix) and the later(Small grip frame)Security Six(151 and up, serial number prefix). The width of the large grip at the wide bottom section, measures 1-7/8". The small grip measures only 1-11/16"(Or, 3/16" smaller than the large grip). Another way to tell is to look at the circular disc, on the inside top part of the grips-as the diameter of the disc, for the early 150 series grip, measures 3/4" and, the later 151(And up)series grip, measures 11/16"(Or, 1/16" less than the large grip.

    I also have a Security Six with a 150 prefix. I had to have a set of Eagle wood grips modified to fit mine. It is very comfortable and with the big wooden finger grips it looks very nice. It was almost unshootable with the old grips. They were tiny.

    Unfortunately the early 150 series of Security Six was discontinued a long time ago. None of the aftermarket grip makers are making a grip to "drop on" that series. You might be able to "fit" a set to your gun, but they won't just go on without a lot of work. Even then you might not be able to get them to work. Since the Hogue's are so exact in there fit, there is little chance that those could be made to work. The Pachmayr might be able to be carved on to work, but I have never tried it. I have found it difficult in the past to find even factory grips for the 150 series Security Six.

    Right now(2/05/04)there are three sets of Jay Scott grips, that are for the 150 series Security Six and Service Six. These are exactly like the original Ruger grips-but are fancy(Stag, white pearl, black pearl). I got a set of these grips before, and, they are very nice grips! Go to ebay and search for Ruger Security Six. Look for item numbers 365932248(Stag)or, 3659321330(White pearl)or, look for the black pearl grips(Same seller-as I don't have the item number-but, you can tell from the picture that these are obviously for the 150 series Security Six/Service Six)! Keep looking on ebay-as I eventually found some Herritt's Shooting Stars grips, that were for the 150 series Ruger's! And, I got lucky and found some Herritt's shooting Master grips too! These were new grips! Some seller's don't know which series grips they have-and, I just went by looking closely, at the pictures and the shape of the grips backstrap(And, I got lucky!)!
