class iii permit

Need some insight. I sent all the paperwork and a check to BATF, they cashed my check 8 weeks ago 3 weeks after it was received. Does anyone have recent experience getting a class iii permit. I am purchasing a gun from an individual and getting impatient. [:p]

    Normal turn around for a tax paid transfer has been 3-6 months. If you applied for transfer of a class III firearm with the fingerprint cards, passport photos and law enforcement ok you can call the NFA branch of the BATF and check the progress.

    If this is your first NFA weapon allow upto 6 months for the paperwork to approved & returned to your dealer.

    You can follow this link, to tell who your examiner is at the atf, it will give you an ideal as to how long it is taking to get the paperwork back.

    I did 2 form 4's in Sept 2002, it took about 16 weeks to get them both back.

    Hah. My brother-in-law is going through this nightmare. He sent everything off last September. That's right 2001! They 'lost' his paperwork twice and the form changed once, so he had to do it over. He gets to visit it every once in a while. Ruined me for a Class III weapon, I'll tell you that much.

    just got off phone w/ atf branch - paperwork now in process(2 months after receipt) and it will be 90 - 120 days before i receive stamps.
    not a venture for the impatient!

    Don't feel too bad. A couple of years back I did a Form 5 transfer to a PD in Wisconsin. Form 5's are as simple as they get: there is no tax paid, no fingerprints or LE sign-off. It is a straight transfer from a fully licensed dealer (Me) to a police department. It still took 13 weeks! How would you like to have the chief call you every week? And of course I could not get my money until the PD got their shippment and I could not ship until the BATF approved the transfer. Not a great way to earn a living- no matter how many banned toys you get to play with! I did a Form 1 five years ago and it took 4 months and being licensed help speed that process along (or so I was told).
    Nobody is in a big rush, that is for sure. And keep in mind that there are anti gun types who'd like to see assault weapons subjected to these same types of transfer procedures.

    thought i might keep anyone whose interested posted on the progress of my class iii deal. i received a form in the mail today to prove my citizenship, simple to fill out, but one more new step. simply write your name on line 1 and line 2 and sign the bottom. lots of hoops to jump through!

    Trust the term "check" was an oversite. I believe BATF takes postal MO's only. Your dealer should not have taken a personal check from you. That aside, you will be hearing from your dealer in a few weeks. As the others have said, the first one is the worst. Kind of like my first wife!

    "check" is accurate, they did cash my personal check - i am buying the weapon from an individual. the instuctions as well as a phone call confirmed that a personal check is OK

    Joann Chapmans transfer's appear to take 11 weeks, you should get your paperwork some time this month.
    Are you froathing at the mouth yet? Finger itchy?

    I stand corrected. You are right about the check. It must be my dealer that askes for the $200. to be a money order. You are buying from an individual but you are running this through a class 3 dealer -right?

    At any rate, as others have said, this takes a long time. Especially the first one. Have fun!

    i am buying from an individual who has the gun registered in his name. spoke w/ several dealers and they would all handle transaction for a fee, the only advantage would be help w/ paperwork.
