.30-06 Ackley Improved

Beerboy made a post wondering about converting a Savage .30-06 to 300 Winchester. One writer suggested re-chambering to .30-06 Ackley Improved. I would like more information on this round.

1. What exactly is a .30-06 Ackley Improved?

2. Does this round really produce 300 Win. performance?

3. Are loading dies available for this round?

  Check out this website www.eabco.com he sells contender/encore type pistols and rifles many of them in ackley chamberings. Give him an e-mail he seems like a good guy, I e-mailed him with a couple ?'s and he got right back. I know for sure he sells the reloading dies. Its not much but I hope it helps...........lazy

  I have had several rifles rechambered from '06 to Ackley '06 Imp. None of them showed an increase in velocity that had been hoped for. It does allow one to consume more slower burning powders to achieve the same velocities. It is the only Ackley Imp. that has been a disappointment to me. Love the smaller cases like the 250/3000. 257 and the 7MM Imps. Redding and RCBS catalog the dies, cost more than standard however.

  The majority of the Ackley chamberings are made by taking the original caliber, and extending the body of the case, and adding a 40 degree shoulder angle. This increases powder volume, and with the addition of the shoulder angle, pressures are increased. Many long range guys like an improved case because they feel it burns more powder inside the case instead of inside the barrel throat, thus slightly reducing erosion. It is a way of creating more performance with less powder. I have several ackley chamberings and am happy with them as far as performance and accuracy. They do require handloading, that's the one thing that pushes most people away from wildcats.
