1/9 twist on Savage rifle
My son is thinking about buying a Savage bolt action in .223. I notice the twist for Savage barrels in that caliber is 1 in 9". I am accustomed to .223 with barrels of 1 in 12". I normally shoot bullets between 40 and 55 grs. Will the 1 in 9" twist rate restrict using such small bullets or will he be limited to heavies bullets?

My AR with a 1 in 9 shoots 55gn FMJ fine. 0 -
1:9 will run you clean up to 70gr pills with no problem. His will shoot just as well as yours with lighter pills,..but will stabilize pills that your 1:12 can't.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Like JustC said, he won't have trouble shooting the lighter bullets as much as you would have trouble shooting the heavier bullets.
The 1 in 12" twist does not allow sufficient spin to stabilize a heavier bullet. However the 1 in 9" will give plenty for both.
Just remember not to get too light or it will over spin the bullit and throw it out of balance, then you end up with keyholing projectiles. I think a safe bet would be no less than 50gr.

With the velocities produced by the 223 the following is marginally less true than if we were discussing something along the 22-250 line, but when using really light bulets (in this case the 40 grainers)like the Speer TNT Hollowpoints (thin jackets for light game), avoid pushing them too fast. The centrifigal force created by the faster twist will sometimes cause the bullet to explode not too far from the barrel. This can be fun to watch but is no fun when hunting or bench shooting. I've experienced this myself with 223 Rem and 225 Winchester. If you don't know whats going on it will drive you nuts! 2 shots in a half inch and then a complete miss...this alternated for about 40 rounds until the range master saw what was happening and pointed it out. Embarasing, but educational I guess.

A fast twist will cause MOST light weight bullets to become unglued !!

the light pills that disintegrate are always light jacketed varmint or light skinned game pills shoved at HIGH velocities through a heavy twist. Many times,..the barrels that exhibit this trait have a very slight change or imperfection in the rifling which coupled with HIGH rotational forces and thin jackets, will force a "core speration". We have seen a match tube in 1:8 twist chambered in 220swift Ackely Improved blow up bullets clean up to 80grs!!!!!!!!! But that was found to be an imperfection in the rifling,..other subsequent barrels did not exhibit this effect.
The problem will quite often present in a factory tube moreso than a match grade tube due to the rough finish. This is assuming a high velocity chambering such as a 22-250 or a 220swift. The match barrel on an m16 or ar15 is a 1:7 twist and won't seperate the 40gr pills unless a rifling flaw is present.
When you get into high RPM's you need a HIGH QUALITY tube.

JUSTC, ALL military M16A2, A3 and A4s have 1/7 rifling and use 55gr bullets.

I own exactly what you are looking at buying. It will stabilize the 69 gr. Sierras only if you push them up near the max. I also found that out with the Berger 70 gr. VLD's. It has no problem with anything down to 50 grs. loaded near max. I ran one box of 'low cost' Winchester ammo with 45 gr. at 3600 fps and shot some magnificent groups (.187-5 shot). I've said many times that Savage produces some of the best accuracy out of the box without a lot of fanfare. Not big on looks...just where the bullet hits. I think your sone would very much enjoy that rifle.
One more thing though, you will need to clean it more often between groups as the fast twist tends to pick up more copper.
