SKS high cap conversion, now won't feed

I bought a yugo unissued SKS and had it converted to take high cap mags but can't get them to feed with any luck beyond 2 or 3 times. Is there anything that needs to be done to improve the feeding. It seems like the tips of the shells are getting hung on the flat lip around the entrance to the chamber.

    I'VE DONE THAT WITH TWO DIFFERENT GUNS AND DID NOT HAVE ANY LUCK. WITH BOTH GUNS I PUT THE FACTORY MAG BACK IN AND THEY WORKED FINE.

    I HAVE SENCE GIVEN UP ON SKS'S.

    HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK.

    The SKS was designed for the 10 round Magazine....The coversions are a pain in the Patootie...One Might work out of 50..But the Horror Stories far out number the latter...Feel fortuneate that You still had the pieces to put it back together as it was designed......

    I assume what you mean when you say conversion, is that you removed the 10 round magazine and are now using a hi-cap magazine that is avaialable on the aftermarket. As Capt. Kirk has said the conversions are very difficult and expensive, requiring extensive machine work.

    Many people on this forum will bad-mouth the high-cap mags, because of the very type condition you are describing. There is a good replacement 20 shot extended magazine if you can find one. It is identical to the original 10 shot mag, only it is a 20 rounder. I think they are available, but you will have to look.

    Anyway, I have an SKS and only use the hi-caps in it. They work very well in my rifle. My SKS is a Chinese rifle and while I don't know if that makes any difference or not, mine will feed and use the hi-caps withoout jamming or failing to feed. If your rifle is brand new, it might need some breaking in, before it will feed from a hi-cap reliablely. Also, I would stay with the steel hi-caps and avoid the plastic mags. Lastly if the first steel hi-cap doesn't work, try another one and this will sometimes help.

    Between my daughter and I we have 3 Yugo SKS's. Even though my first inpulse was to go with the 30-50 round mags, after reading a WHOLE lot of horror stories from guys that have done that and no longer had relieable function, I have decided to leave all our SKS's factory stock in regards to the mags.

    Like another poster stated a long time ago, just learn to use stripper clips and you will be able to shoot as fast as can reasonably be expected and still retain any kind of accuracy. Plus you will still have the dependability, save money, etc.

    If you just have to have a high capacity magazine on an inexpensive rifle shooting inexpensive ammo, get an AK-47 varient.

    I have never had any problems with the USA mags I use in my SKS's, some of the cheapos are worthless.

    Narrow the bottom of the bolt to pass thru the mags. I've done it on 2 of my sks's for flawless feeding thru the mags.

    I dont know about horror stories. To me it either works or it doesnt. And you spend 10-$15. You can try your luck with different things. But the word is to keep the 10 round. IF you want to shoot 30 buy an AK like I did. 300 bucks gets your double stack AK

    O.k. , here we go , Again , for the about the zillionth time .....
    We have "smithed' on about a gazillion of these (SKS's) and as a general statement , the Hi-Cap mags Do Not work .....

    P.S. I have even found a 'fix' (simple) for the 'yugo' sks's that we do all the time ???????????but not these hi-cap mags....???????
