Ever heard of?
A slow to peak round. That is what Remington called a 12 ga shell that fired quarter to half way out of chamber. I have pics of shell but dont know how to post them.

Believe "Hang Fire" is the more commonly used term. You more apt to run into it with old military ammo. With some of the old stuff I've used there is a noticeable time lag from when the firing pin hits the primer till the cartridge actually fires.
It shouldn't be happening with modern commerical ammo, "UNLESS" the primeing compound is bad. Nothing much will happen "UNLESS" you attempt to extract the cartridge while the primer is still "cooking off".

I agree with Rufe... I chose my handle from my first experience as a kid shooting old 7.35 Italian Terni surplus ammo.It took about 4 seconds for that ammo to fire after pulling the trigger. I'm glad I was forewarned or the round would have gone off with the bolt partially opened!!!

Had a hangfire while dove hunting several years ago. We were shooting handloads (12 ga.), and all I can figure out is that the base wad was partially covering the flash hole. I was shooting my Left Hand Rem. 870. Some birds popped over a levee and I "shot" at one and pumped the forearm, not registering the falure to fire until the bolt was about half open. Powder burned my right arm, blew the loading gate off, and RUNG MY BELL!!! If I had been shooting a right handed gun, I'd probably be blind in my right eye today, because the blast tore up some leaves and branches on my left side.
Be aware that a hangfire can be very serious and dangerous.0 -
Hangfire...was that old terni stuff bought in the late 70's on the gunshow circuit? My best friend and I (I think we were about 14)bought 100 rounds from a guy at a show in SouthWest Michigan, and were thrilled as we had never been able to fire his nice little Mannlicher Carcanno all the years he'd had it. A few of the rounds went off normaly and then it started..the longest lag was 22 seconds (average was likely around 5 seconds), as we were concerned enough at this to begin counting. I've never heard of any commercially/militaryily loaded rounds that went this long, but it does give you a better appreciation for the 30 second rule! Pretty nerve racking stuff, even for a couple of immortal 14 years olds! Of course, having more balls than brains at that age, and not wanting to trash our rather considerable investment, we stuck with it through all 100 rouds. The brass was fine, the rounds hit more or less where you pointed them and all of them went bang (or rather fizzle as we pulled the bolt about 80 times to make sure there was no blockeage)...eventually. Young and Dumb and full of ***; just lucky I guess. I've wised up at least a little bit since then I'ld like to think!
