Old Shotgun
I have an old shotgun. It's barrel is marked Strong Fire Arms Company and the receiver states A. Dickerman. Does anyone know anything about this fire arm?

I just purchased a double barrel 12ga shotgun by Hopkins & Allen in real good condition, exposed side hammers, no model number with ser. #26272. Any knowledge about the gun, date of manufacture, and the value. Please advise if you can

Well, it has high quality tubes (barrels) on it. Beyond that, it is very unlikely that we can tell you anything more about it other than it was made in Germany, and most likely sometime between WW I and WW II. At least several hundred high quality cottage industry gunmakers existed in that region of Europe before WW II, and many of those nice old shotguns were "liberated" and brought back to the States after the War. There is precious little written information about them.

Your shotgun probably dates to the mid/late 1930's. Gustloff-Werke was the name used by the company that the Nazi's allowed to take over the assets/factories, ect of Simson Firearms after that firm was nationalized.
As this was during the time period that the Germans were rapidly rearming for W W II, it's doubtful that many sporting weapons were produced.
Gustloff-Werke is much better known to colectors as one of the makers of 98k German Army rifle during W W II and the Volksgewehr "People's Rifle" at the end of the war. Wether this association would make your shotgun more valuable, I don't know?
If you can provide quality pictures of the proof marks, and/or describe them in detail it might help us pin down the time frame when your shotgun was produced. As the German proof laws and proofmarks were revised in 1940 ( after the start of W W II ), very few commerical firearms were manufactured/proofed.

My database shows that GUSTLOFF WERKE also made the Bolt Action, Mauser M98, 8mm Military Rifle and the Model KKW,In excellent condition valued at $250.00... .22L.R.R.F., Pre-WW2, Singleshot, Target Sights, Military Style Stock...in Good Condition....Worth $500.00...
The Shotgun, Double Barrel, Side by Side was made in 16ga.,Had an Engraved, Color Case Hardened Frame...In Excellent Condition is Worth $500.00/$700.00...........Nothing Further in My data base....Best....

Fluss Stahl means fluid steel in german. Krupp is the steel manufacturer and Essen the town in Germany where Krupp was located.

SIMSON - BSW - GUSTLOFF WERKE - THAELMANN WERKE One company, four names and three owners.
The Simson Family was in the manufacturing business in and near Suhl-Germany since 1857 and grew into one of the major manufacturers of guns, motorcycles, bicycles and the Simson Supra automobile. They were producers of military guns as well as a complete line of high quality hunting and sporting guns. Since 1884 the company was called Simson & Co. and was re-named Berlin-Suhler Waffen- und Fahrzeugwerke (BSW) in the 1934.
When Hitler came to power, the jewish Simson family was one of the first to feel the heavy hand of the Nazis. Three family members were thrown into prison on trumped up charges of profiteering and only released when they turned over all their factories to the Nazis. Some members of the Simson family were able to go to Switzerland and the United States. The Nazis renamed all factories GUSTLOFF WERKE , also Gustloff Stiftung in 1939. This conglamorate consisted of the Fritz Saukel Works in Weimar, the gun factories in Suhl, the Hirtenberg Ammo.factory, the Muselwitz Engineering Co. and Thuringia House in Berlin.
In 1943 an additional factory was built at the concentration camp Buchenwald
At the end of World War II Suhl was first occupied by American troops on April 4th. 1945 but soon traded off to the Russians in exchange for an Allied presence in Berlin.The Russians confiscated the factory, destroyed some of it and turned the rest over to the east German government (DDR) when it was formed. The Simson factory was combined with all other gun factories in Suhl and now called ERNST THAELMANN WERKE. (Ernst Thaelmann was a martyr of the German communist party) Some of the guns were marked with the Simson name. This ended with the re-unification of Germany and today only motorcycles and motor scooters bear the Simson name.
I have a Gustloff Werke 16 ga s/s with Krupp barrels,twin triggers, nicely engraved for sale - what did you pay for yours if you don't mind me asking?0 -

I wish I could take credit for the information, I cannot...It came from the German Gun Collectors Association based in Meriden New Hampshire. and I quote them below...
"A detailed account of these events can be found in a feature article in the Spring 2000 Journal of the German Gun Collectors Association and is available for $5.00 from the GGCA, P.O.Box 385, Meriden, NH 03770."
and all of this started because I decided to sell a few of my guns, one of which is a Gustloff Werke 16 ga.....0
