Where is the gun stamped 27S ? if you open the cylinder, stamped above the cylinder hinge point is a model number, is it stamped 27-S or 27-2.

Yup...thought I owned a Smith and Wesson model 14-8 for about 20 years (no kidding, I was that oblivious at the time!)that turned out to be a mint model 14-3. You live, learn, and get better glasses!

Pay no attention to the man with the egg on his face![:0]
Does the saying "measure twice and cut once" ring a bell. I guess my highly valued Model 27-S just turned into a very nicely kept Model 27-2! In the words of Homer Simpson...."Doh!"
Sorry for the Senior Moment. Thanks for the input. Guess I'll watch the auctions for a while and see how the rest of these are doing!

    Viking..... Welcome to the forums.

Your Smith 27-2 is worth around $400.00 according to the latest Blue Book. You can add 10% for pinned and recessed models.

Pinned means there is a pin through the frame just above the barrel and ahead of the cylinder. Recessed means the cylinder chambers have a recess cut in them.

The 27-2 was made from 1961 to 1980. If yours has a diamond design around the grip screw hole it was made prior to 1968.

    The model 27's were made in several barrel lengths, 3 1/2", 4", 5", 6", 6 1/2" and 8 3/8". The 3 1/2" and 5" are harder to find.

    Thanks LaredoLefty! [:)]
To show how new I am to the gun world, I just spent 30 minutes searching for the meaning of "Pinned". And I didn't know that being "recessed" was an option. LOL
I can see I have a lot to learn. Perhaps I should change my username to "Grasshopper"! I have several other guns around the house and I'm sure I'll be back for a further education from the forum.[^]

Barrel length can have and affect on value as well. 4' and 6" are common. 3" and 5" have a premium.

When the 27's came out, often a wooden presentation box was included with a screwdriver, cleaning swab, and brush.

A S&W Mod 27 S is most likely a Mod 27 with a serial number that starts with an S. Meaning it's an early gun and more desirable to collectors.[:)]
