Pistol Shopping
I am shopping for a semi-auto pistol as a gift for my son's USMC graduation. Maybe a Berreta, a Glock, or a Sig-Arms. Maybe 9 mm. I would appreciate input on what is a good gun and also a good deal. He is an avid gun enthusiast.

Going to get a lot of opinions here...I'm new to handguns myself and did a lot of research and found the Glock 23 (.40 cal) to be the best for what I wanted. The Beretta was a very very close second. As for caliber, if he wants to shoot for fun go with a 9mm. The .40 and to a more extreme extent the .45 has quite a recoil. I've been out shooting twice with mine and having a hard time getting used to the feel and recoil of the gun. Thinking now of getting a Ruger .22 to learn better how to shoot a pistol then move in to the .40.

My first was a 9mm primarily because it has everything I need as far as personal protection, and ammo is inexpensive and widely available. I shoot mine often and love it. Glock, Beretta, Sig are all great manufacturers... you can't go wrong. I have a Kahr K-9 which is smaller and a bit easier to conceal, but doesn't have the ammo capacity as the above mentioned. Go with the 9mm in any of the above manufacturers and you will be pleased, especially if this is his first handgun. 0 -
My suggestion to you is to take him shopping and see what he likes, it is easy to give advise but it is better to give what fits the person. 0 -
You will get about a thousand opinions.Mostly useless. I suggest you decide for yourself, or with your son. It sounds like a good father and son project. I have a Beretta Cougar in 9mm that I think is great, but someone else will feel it is junk. It just insn't an objective question, so you won't get an objective answer.

Some joker in Army Ordnance forgot the lessons learned over a hundred years ago in the Phillipines and decided the military go back to the useless (for combat anyhow) 9mm in 1986. The boys were writing home for dad to send the old "peacemaker" over. Lo and behold the .45 was once again in business. John Browning did what the Army needed at that point and developed the .45 ACP and the final copy was in business in 1911. Because of the 1986 snafu (congressional buyoff?), Law enforcement decided to look at the minimum sized round that had real stopping power. They settled on the .40 cal.
Since your son has a good chance of serving overseas in one of three hotspots I would recommend buying him a pistol that he can find ammunition for through military channels. As stated earlier, for combat purposes, the 9mm is next to useless. There is a lot of .45 ammo out there in supply so you can get .45 ammo issued to you by the military for combat purpose. I don't know what the story is in the Marines with .40 cal. I do know that Special Operations Soldiers have good access to .40 cal If they want it. They are finding what Law enforcement has is that it has good knockdown with less kick (therefore more recoverability) than the .45. -Good luck, and best wishes to your son.

I have enjoyed my Glock 22, .40 cal. It is a realible gun and well made. However, if you want to up-grade I have heard many good things about Sig's. 0 -
A couple things to add to my previous dissertation. I own and love having a .45. It does what I want. I've shot .40's and like them too. They still fit into the "one shot one Knockdown" category.
I have also found that polymer frames absorb recoil better than solid steel frames.

Gonna' throw my hat in the ring and say look at the EAA Witness pistols. Excellent value, and available in a wide variety of configurations. They chamber guns for 9mm (which the original model Chzech CZ 75 started out in), 357 Sig, 40 Smith, 10mm (a real performer, but not likely findable in a combat theatre for your son), and of course, good ole' 45 ACP. I don't know how much you have to spend, but for the $400 range, the Witnesses are nearly impossible to beat!
