game for a 308
what are the largest size game that a 308 can reasonably take down.
would like a rifle that i can both hunt with and do some paper punching.
i know the 30-06 will take on most game on the continent but i have heard that the 308 is more accurate.

The 308 will do everything that the 30-06 will do as long as your using bullets of 180 grains or less. Once you start getting over 180 grain bullets the 308 starts to lose case capacity.

Up to 165gr the 308 and 30-06 are fairly equil (308 runs at higher pressure), above 170gr the -06 takes the lead due to it's larger internal capacity.
You didn't mention how far away your going to be shooting, but within reasonable ranges, both will work on anything in the US, IF the shooter does their job. If big bear (Griz, brown, polar, kodiak) are on your menu the -06 would be the best choice of the 2 (launching 220gr bullets), but if those were on your menu I suspect you'd be looking at somthing with a tad more power.
Accuracy depends on a lot more than the cartridge it's chambered for, so saying one is more accurate than the other is not somthing I'm willing to do.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
I am with gunner on this ,having used both cals for about thirty years.Realy doesdepend on whatyouare hunting for.If i were guideing someone for bear or something likethat ihad rather have someone who is an excellent shot with a 308 than a nimrod with a new 500 super duper magnum express critter getter that he was scared of .Stalking to within range and ACCURATE shot placement wins everytime.PERSONALLY when used within its limits either is fine ,3006 has a bit more versatility simply because of its wider range of bullet weights But if the gun gods said i had to use my 308 for everything i could do fine with that.Just my 2 cents worth

The 30-06 would be the more versatile of the two. However, it's much more punishing while shooting on the range. Like the other posts have said the .308 can do anything the 30-06 can do up to the 165/180 gr. bullet range. That would be enough to go after elk and moose at closer ranges of say within 200 yds. Out to 300 yds. if you get the exceptionally clear shot. If you intend to go after bigger/moe dangerous game something with more power still might be in order. -good luck

I shoot and reload for both calibers. The debate between these two is like deciding to buy a Ford, Chevy or Dodge truck. Both are great, some of us lucky ones have both. If I were to choose again I would opt for the '06. It is just a little more versitle for the heavier bullets.
As for the accuracy, both CAN be exceptional.
As for the size of game... Last I checked there were still lots of people hunting all kinds of elk, moose, deer and even bears with a bow. I would think even a 150gr bullet from the .308 would be more effective than an arrow.
I would say you can not go wrong with either.0 -
Another up side of the .308 over the 30-06 is that there is a bunch of inexpensive surplus ammo out there for plink'n and such. A partner of mine took his first elk with a .308 about four years back, he was about 75yd out and it droped to the first 180gNosler as nice as anyone could ask for. 0 -
As stated,the 308 is adequate for any game in the US. The key is bullet selection. For large game such as elk,moose,or bear I would recommend the Nosler Partition or maybe the Barnes X in 180gr weight. 0
