S&W Mod. 29
I am looking at a S&W mod. 29. 6" barrel, in very good condition, with a low 4 digit serial number, 13XX any idea on the value of this pistol?

A photo would help. Most I've seen go for around $250-$350. I saw a nearly perfect one go $580 at an auction back in the summer.

Introduced in Dec. of 1955, First revolver presented to R.H. Coleman of Remington s/n S130927 thus it is not quite possible for you to have a 4 digit s/n.
If you are looking inside of the crane cutout you may be mistaking the assembly/bin number for the s/n.
If the sideplate has 4 screws in it and another (5th) screw on the front of the trigger guard facing back toward the butt ... you have a pre-Model 29 5 screw model, they also mfg. some 4 screw (top side plate screw eliminated) pre-Model 29's.
Your barrel length will be 6 1/2 inches unless you have an 8 3/8th that has been cutdown. Barrel length is measured from cone to tip of barrel. Many people measure length from the front of the frame so this probably accounts for the difference.
Value wise, 5 screw, in top condition w/ box and papers you could be in the $1,500 - $2,000+ range. 4 screw models in like condition, etc. can bring $1,000+ However, more information, including pictures, would be needed for a better valuation. And as this is apparently an early 44 mag. I would suggest that you get a S&W factory letter ($30) that will give you date of mfg., where shipped, etc. as they add to the value. Another suggestion is that you have a local shop or shops give you an "insurance" apprasial ... they generall run a little higher than actual selling value ... but by asking for an insurance apprasial you preclude the shop thinking that your looking to sell it and therefore giving you the lower "dealers" price/valuation.
Would be nice if you double checked the s/n (best place is on the bottom of the grip frame) and let us know ... as I personally would like to know how early of a revolver you have.

If you got the serial number right you got a long hunt ahead of you.That was way before the mod 29s were made.Model marked 29s weren't made until about 1958 and serial numbers would be like S1809999 your's was a four digit number?

Where do you see them going that cheap? $400 to $600 is what a Model 29 goes for around here.
