REMINGTON 870s
I have been seeing Remington 870 shotguns everywhere.I assume they have been around for awhile.I have thinking about getting a pump shotgun for sometime.What are the good and bad point's about them ? I would be using it for a camping/home defense weapon.

Remington 870's have been around for decades. They are excellent pump shotguns, considered by many to be one of the finest.
The 870 is still one of the most common police shotguns. They are very reliable and robust. Unlike some other makes, the 870's use dual action bars. These are the metal bars attached to the pump connecting it to the bolt.
Having the dual bars eliminates binding when pumping the action. I own 2 of them, and they have been going strong for years.

Excellent shotgun, the Remington 870 was introduced in 1950 or so, so it's been around for about 50 years and over 6 million have been manufactured/sold. Definately one of the most durable and reliable pump action shotguns ever made. I got mine around 1967 and have fired thousands of factory loads and the heaviest reloads you can imagine through it without a hitch.

I got mine (12 gauge) 52 yrs ago for my 12th birthday. It's worked ever since. The original stock was sort of skimpy, so I spent $14.00 on a utility grade walnut stock with a raised cheekpiece from Fajen and fitted it and a recoil pad. I have fired dozens of other shotguns, and prefer the 870 to any of them. Also, I put a PolyChoke on it but am afraid to fire steel shot in it for fear of harming the choke. Since I don't live on the Mississippi Flyway any more, this hasn't been a problem. 0 -
the 870 is probably the most popular shotgun there is.. I imagine the mossberg 835 is up there too, due to its price and availability, but the versatility of the 870 is great, as well as the price. I snatched up an 870 Wingmaster 20 ga., used, but in great condition, for only $100 last year.. which is a STEAL

Hmmm, I just remembered I took brand new 870 in trade a couple years back. I've been wondering what was in that box in the back of the closet. I was thinking gun socks. I don't have a clue how it got put in there. Girlfriend on a cleaning fit I guess. Hmmm lets see we have an 870 Super Magnun 3-1/2 chamber with a turkey barrel. When these puppies are broken down they sure fit in an awful small box. this is almost as good as getting it for Christmas.

I got a 870 when I was 12 its been through hell and it still shoots. When I was 14 I was walking along the river and fell in with my 870 and it still works fine.

Between my sons and I, we own 6 Rem. 870's. The oldest is a Mid 50's
Wingmaster that belonged to my Grandfather. They have proven to be reliable, tough pump guns for us.
I currently have an 870 with a 20" barrel as a home defense shotgun.
Lots of accessories out there to build one up any way you want it.

I have a 870 built strictly for defensive use. They are probably one of the best pump shotguns out there for this purpose in opinion.
Got mine brand new at Sportmart for 230.00 with a synthetic stock.
Switched out the stock for a Hogue Shot stock. (40.00) Wilson Combat Fore-Ends (20.00) Wilson Combat 2 Shot Magazine Extension. (45.00) Side Saddle Shell Holder (30.00)
And CQP Solution Sling (40.00)
All the upgrades are not a must but I wanted to build a gun like the Wilson/Scattergun Tech shotgun without spending 1100.00
For a true test I took a 2 day Combat Shotgun course with it. After 750 rounds there were no malfunctions noted. Not as fast as your semi autos of course but I didn't have the malfunctions the semi autos had. Accuracy with a smooth bore 18"? We were hitting steel (18" x 18") out to 100 yards with slugs and if we missed, it was close enough to where if it was a real threat out there, they would of ducked or moved. All using a bead sight.
Also took the gun on a 4 day field craft class and IT GOT THE CRAP beat out of it! Even with it being dropped, kicked, sat on, stepped on, and pretty much just abused, she still fired during our live fire and E&E drills. A lil hard to pump with all the sand and dirt but still worked like a champ.
Now for the bad points. The 870 is not the lightest thing to carry out there. Also not as user friendly to south paws. I am a lefty and find it to be no big deal to operate the safety on and off.

I just assembled this thing that has been hiding in my closet for two years. It is sure is a lot heavier than my Ithaca m-37. Call me lazy if you will but I'll stick with the m-37.
