Mass. C+R Question

Looking for information on Massachusetts C+R requirements. My parents are applying for one and the feds say you have to comply with Mass. laws 30 days after getting the permit. They have asked the local chief of police and no one seems to know what those requirements might be. Calling the state is just about as helpful.

    I don't think that you interpreted the instructions from ATF correctly. They are NOT saying, "Find out what the MA C&R requirements are, & follow them." They are saying, "Learn all MA state & local gun laws & obey them, since your C&R does not give you any right to circumvent them unless the law specifically states that it does."

    If one of them gets a C&R (C&R's are issued to individuals, not groups), he will also get a copy of State Laws and Published Ordinances - Firearms (ATF P5300.5). This book contains all relevant state & local laws. When your he tries to buy a gun from someone in another state, this is the book that the seller will check to see if he can transfer a gun to him.

    I hate to tell you this, but most of us will not transfer ANY firearm into MA unless it goes to a dealer. That's because it's illegal for any non-dealer to possess a firearm without a Firearms Identification Card, & we don't want to get into validating FICs. So, it appears that a C&R is of little value in MA.

    But, check out the regulations in ATF P 5300.5 at the ATF website & see for yourself.

    Thanks for the reply. I will send this thread to them. I have had problems as well sending firearms to FFL holders for transfer purposes. I always include a copy of my pistol permit and drivers license for their records but some will not accept them unless from an FFL holder. I guess it is understandable why people are so reluctant.
