AK Pistol build legality update

Is it legal to build an AK pistol with a AMD-65 and an 80% receiver? If so, how many American parts, if any are required?? I have seen this discussed on other forums, but trust those with knowledge more on here than elsewhere.

The AMD-65 parts kit came in today. I bought one from Centerfire Systems. When they say new, they mean new. I don't think this rifle was ever fired before they drilled the rivets out of the receiver. To build a rifle out of this would require more American parts and a barrel extension, but this kit is perfect for a pistol build.

    i asked a simalar question, if i could take off the butt stock and have two pistol grips on a ak47, someone said i could if it was a certain lenght and i was 1 inch short. the person to ask is drobs.

    first rule of northern militia is that we don't talk about northern militia.

    I don't want the front pistol grip, just the rear. I will make a new front hand guard.

    If you use an 80% receiver, you need not worry about the "parts count". The receiver IS the gun, &, since you will be manufacturing the receiver in the US, imported or domestic parts don't matter. The law only applies to imported guns, which means either the entire gun or just the receiver.

    Now I know that you didn't ask, but there are few guns more worthless than an AK pistol. A blast to shoot, yes, but completely worthless. But, I continue to defend your right to have any gun you want.

    no, not quite... you are restricted on the number of foreign parts used in a build... the receiver can be foreign or domestic, it doesn't matter... parts count will still apply.

    two grips on a pistol make it an AOW and that has to be registered with the ATF.

    Vic, I assume that you are referring to the parts limitation in Section 178.39; that section prohibits the assembly of a semi-auto rifle or shotgun that is ineligible for importation if it has insufficient US-made parts. Haroldchrismeyer wants to manufacture a gun; the manufacture of such a pistol was prohibited by the AWB, which has expired, so the manufacture of a gun as he has proposed was not covered in 178.39.

    If you can cite some other reference that restricts the number of foreign made parts in his project, I'm sure that we would all be interested.

    I was actually just referring to your statement that the receiver is the gun and since you will be manufacturing the receiver in the US parts counts don't matter... guess I just took that out of context because parts count does still matter when building a rifle, even if the receiver is made in the US...

    Well I'm disappointed. I thought that now it was legal to have 2 pistol grips on a Tec-9, Mac, etc. I guess I'm wrong. I know the proceedure if I wanted to buy an AOW from a dealer but how do I go about creating one (by wanting to add the second grip) from something I own? If the pistol is an NFA piece, does that make any difference?

    Hang on a sec. Your AMD-65, is it a short barreled rifle (class 3 or registered as a "pistol") or does it have a 16" (or longer) barrel on it? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe that having two pistol grips on a "rifle" (16" barrel AK) is illegal anymore is it?

    Pistol because it meets the definition of a pistol, and not a rifle. It has no provision for mounting a butstock(not when it is done anyway). You can't have a front pistol grip on a pistol(forearm without a pistol grip is ok). Barrel length on a AMD-65 is 12.4 inches. You can make it a rifle, but to retain the pistol grip and folding stock you have to add American parts, and add a permanently attached barrel extension(unless you get permission to make a short barreled rifle.
