5.7 Johnson in M1 Carbine

I do like to tinker. Especially old projects that never happened for lack of time to do. I am considering installing a new barrel in 5.7 Johnson (30.Carb. necked down to .22) into one of my M1 carbines. I would have to get a set of "carbide" (preferred) dies to convert my existing 30 Carb. brass. I know they sell the unprimed new brass in 5.7 Johnson, but I want to shoot the darn thing, and I will loose a lot of brass. The question being, other than having custom dies made up: does any one know where I could find a set of ready made dies? and also. Could I find (if they made it) a 5.7 barrel for the Universal carbine?

    I'd phone Gun Parts Corp. A year or 2 ago they had barrels in 5.7mm Johnson; I don't recall if they had dies.

    In any case, barrel installation in an M1 carbine is a job for a gunsmith, not a tinkerer. That's especially true with a Universal, as some of these were defective & are subject to catastrophic failure. The best gunsmiths are those trained as machinists, & I'm sure that a good one could make one of the 5.7mm Johnson barrels fit in any carbine.

    Finally, there's a good reason that the 5.7mm Johnson conversion never became popular: There are many better & cheaper choices for just about any purpose for which you might use that gun.

    Thank you, Neal. I have been a professional gunsmith now for over thirty years, and done many conversions before, in this and other "toys". I have a complete machine shop to do any mods. necessary including welding and forging, and the training of a tool and die maker plus mechanical engineering. I was not interested in doing this particular conversion before for myself (my own use), but now I am. Gun Parts catalog lists the empty brass and barrels for the mil-spec carbine, but not for the Universal. If I do not have to modify parts so much the better, unless I don't have a choice. So I am still looking for a barrel made specifically for the Universal, if it was made. My first concern is the question of the re-loading dies, and thought somebody here might know of some. Thank you for your reply.

    Hello The only carbide dies I have seen for a BOTTLE neck cartridge were very costly Huntington used to be ceo of RCBS but now makes dies on many custom cartriges.

    Here is location you can get case forming dies for the 5.7mm Johnson and custom reloading dies. You might also search for the .22 Spitfire to find components.

    Midway has plenty of all types of dies for the 5.7 Johnson.

    Prices don't look so bad considering the nature of the cartridge.

    Thank you "perryshooter". I'll see about making a contact. I don't want to modify another die for use. I'd rather use the right die, made for that specific cartridge. I hate lubeing cases, so I'd preferr carbide to steel, unless I don't have a choice.
