1800's Colt shotgun..please help!
Hi all...I hope someone can help me...I have a colt shotgun I would like info on...prices..how to sell etc. it is in great conditon..12 gauge...double triggers...auto safety..double barrel...hammerless...on the solid rib it says..COLT PT FA MFG CO HARTFORD CONN USA..on onderside in front of trigger it says patented Aug12 Sept 19 1882..serial # 6326...it has original recoil pad...I want to sell this, but have no idea where to start...has been in my family since day 1....I am in southern wisconsin...thanks for any help, Mike .

Welcome to the zoo. Your Colt hammerless shot gun is known as the Model 1883. It was made from 1883-1895 in 10 gauge and 12 gauge, however, some 8 gauges have been reported and are considered rare. Standard barrel lengths are 28, 30 and 32 inches. Special barrels range from 18" on the short side to 36" on the long side. All barrels were made in Belgium and assembled and finished at the Colt factory. Frames and forend fittings were casehardened, barrels were blued or browned. Stocks were oil stained or varnished with checkered pistol grip. However, here again some straight grip stocks are known.
Only about 7,366 guns are known to have been made. Your serial number would seem to put your gun in the latter years of production.
Your Colt has the potentical to be a valuable firearm, however, you don't give us enough description to even guess at a value. I can tell you one thing, the recoil pad is NOT original and will detract from the value of the gun.
Send us a full description of the gun's condition including the amount of finish remaining onthe barrels and stock, condition of the bores, ect. and we will what we can do as to value. If the barrels are of Damascus twist, do not shoot the gun.

Thanks Scout...barrels are damascus...blued in perfect shape...stock is varnished in very good shape...bores are perfect...30'' barrel...checkered pistol grip....ejectors...auto safety...anything else?....thanks so much...Mike 0 -

I have the same Mdl gun, Iroquois. Could you tell me how to get the fore end off? I can't get it to come off, and it is very dirty and rusty under there. Thanks.

Hi Merc...on mine in the center of the fore end there is a thin metal lever you pull down on...almost dead center in the wood...very small and hard to do...but yes you need to clean under there....also thanks to everyone who replied...Mike 0
