Interpret serial number on Winchester 94?

Can I tell from the numbers on this gun when it was built? Its a Winchester 94 30-30.

Serial number is: 4107162

    It was manufactured late 1974 to early 1975.

    There is no "breakdown". The serial number is simply a sequential number applied to every Model 1894/94 that was manufactured between October of the year 1894 and when your Carbine was manufactured. In other words, it is the 4,107,162nd gun made.

    ahhh, I figured a gun serial was similar to a car. like one number is the year, then the sequential number of that year or something like that.

    That is the case with some firearms manufacturers, but not Winchester. Browning used a two digit code to indicate the year of manufacture, and the specific variant of the Model. Remington uses a unique letter code that indicates the specific month and year, but does not define the Model.

    So there were basically 4,107,161 model 94s made before mine?? Wow. Wonder what the current numbers are. With that kind of proliferation you'd think they were dropping out of gumball machines.

    Who knows they may have started with 4,000,000. Like the number on your checks in your check book. I wouldn't want to take check number 1 from anyone. Just my two cents.

    Nope, they started at #1 in 1894. 14,759 made that year.

    Yep, there were a LOT of them made before yours[:)]. I believe that the current serial numbers on the Model 94 are in the 8 Million range today.

    For what it is worth, the Model 1894/94 is the longest continuously produced, and the most prolific sporting firearm in world history. John M. Browning was a genius![^]
