Colt Cap and Ball

Tonight my Aunt handed me a revolver. It looks rough. It has an engraved cylinder with 4 sailing ships, one of which has a side wheel. Vertically the cyclinder front says Engaged 16 May 1843. Horizonally on the cyclinder it reads
Colt's Patent No
Pat Sept 10th 1850

It has no trigger nor the pin/screw that holds the trigger in place. The flat pin/bar that is under the barrel,just in front of cyclinder there is a empty pin/screw hole.
I can find no other markings. Any ideas on what I have and who would I talk with to find out if it can be fixed.

    All parts for the original Colt revolvers are available from Dixie Gun Works. Some of these are reproduction and some are original and are marked as such.

    before you do anything, you need to find out if its a replica or an original. Try and take some pics and post them here for help

    I would suggest you follow the suggestion made earlier and do little or NOTHING to it befor determining a) is it a replica or original, and b) where you should, in the event of it being original, get a qualified appraisal. Even in rough shape, it could be worth a pretty good chunk of change.
