Sears - Ted Williams - Model 300 - 20 Gauge

Hi, new to the forums.

My Father just gave me a shotgun he never used. It is stamped "Ted Williams * Model 300 * 20 GA * 2 _ Cham * VC Sears Roebuck & Co * NO. 273.821280

Is anyone familiar with this shotgun brand? What year was this made? Are they reliable? Does anyone know how to find a manual perhaps? It seems to be in very good condition.

Any information would be appreciated.

    Sean, your Sears Ted Williams brand model 300 shotgun was actually made for Sears, Roebuck, and company by Winchester. It is basically identical (most internal parts are interchangeable, but some of the wood is not) to a Winchester model 1400 semi-automatic. I purchased a Sears Ted Williams brand model 200 shotgun (12ga with vari-choke, which is like a polychoke) in 1982 brand new in the store for $159 plus tax. This was basically a clone of the Winchester model 1200 pump, only that gun had the more popular screw-in choke tubes. I think Sears sold these Ted Williams branded shotguns (and rifles) from around 1970 (possibly even earlier)to the mid-1980's. Then, due to sagging sales, Sears opted to stop re-selling Winchester firearms manufactured specifically for them under the 'Ted Williams' brand. Also, as far as value, a Sears Ted Williams clone almost always sells for less than a 'genuine' Winchester stamped firearm, even though they use identical parts and are basically brothers. I liked my model 200, and it was sort of a value-priced gun at the time, but later in life, when my wallet was thicker, (and my father no longer had jurisdiction over which gun I had to buy) I discovered the 870 Wingmaster, and its much smoother action and better balance (IMO), and I have never looked back.

    not every day you see slug sites on a vent rib. did he have that added on?

    Your gun is basically the same as my Winchester 1400 in 20 ga. You can find an on-line owners manual by searching under Winchester 1400 Owners Manual. If I can recall the web site, I'll post it later. In my experience,these are good, solid, and reliable shotguns. Keep it lubed and clean it occasionally and it should serve you well for years.

    And out of curiosity, what did you mean by that?
