SKS modifications.....
I'm sure this has been hashed/re-hashed, but I couldn't get the "search" function to work....[B)]
Did the expiration of the AWB make it legal to modify the SKS? Specifically, to remove bayonet/grenade launcher, and add bipod/muzzle brake - or did a different part of the CFR cover these modifications?
I do realize state/local laws can come into play here....I'm asking only about federal law.

You can modify it anyway you want now.
But you have a C&R then then it must remain as in it's original configuration. You can't "Sportizer it"

The prohibition on assembly of non-sporting shotguns and semiautomatic rifles from imported parts as provided under 18 U.S.C. ? 922(r) and 27 CFR ? 478.39 still applies.
If you reduce your number of imported parts to 10 or less, thereby changing the status to a domestic firearm, you can have the bayonet and lug, and even legally install a pistol-grip-folding stock, flash-hider, hi-capacity detachable mag!
TAPCO has everything you need for a legal conversion!
The search feature is very slow to come up ... after clicking the search feature button you should go fix a cup of coffee ... or go to the bathroom ... or be otherwise productive while you wait ...
This is even true for broadband users ... dial-up people, you might as well just search page by page yourself [xx(] or take a nap [|)].If you really want to do something, you'll find a way ...

Thanks very much for the reply. By the above, you mean that it would lose C&R status if modified...right?
Thanks again,

Knock yourself out; you can do just about anything you want. (Of course, you still must keep the barrel & overall length legal.)

[:D]No doubt about that! I'm a DSL/broadband guy, and it timed me out before the search ever finished....[:(]
Thanks for the factsheet link, Neal.

The quickest way to do the search function is to click on SEARCH. wait a few seconds and hit your browser STOP button. This should bring up the search feature. Enter the search keywords the hit the ENTER button on your keyboard.
There is no pleasure in having nothing to do;the fun is having lots to do and not doing it.0
