Remington 788

I have a picture of my dad from 1973 holding an antelope and the rifle he shot it with. He wrote on the picture that the antelope was shot with a 6mm. The rifle he is holding looks exactly like a Remington 788 except it looks like it has a stainlees(or stainless color)bolt and trigger gaurd. The clip is black or is bluing like on a regular rifle as I know 778s to be and the barrel is also the bluing as on a regular rifle. The wood on the rifle has a blond colored finish.

Did Remington 788s ever come with a stainless or stainless colored bolt and trigger gaurd?

    I just picked up a in the original box (still has the "Big 5 - $129.00" price tag on it) Remington 788 in 7-08 and although it has a 2 piece weaver base included I'd like to go with a two piece turn in type. Problem is the 788 has 2 scope holes up front, one in the rear, haven't found anything listed.

    Any way to mount a two piece on this thing? I thought the XP 100 and the Rem 7 have the same set up and I see they have two piece bases, are they interchangeable with the 788?

    the 788 in 243 was made both as a rifle and a carbine [8D] , you should do a search on the auctions for one or post a want to buy add on that forum

    They made a .243 and a 6mm as well. Same diameter bullet, case slightly different.

    Can you elaborate on the (SLEEVED STYLE) action a little just in case I have one stashed away ?

    remington made the 788 i have several not for sale you should be able to pick one up on the auctions a nice one with a scope for 350.00 to 400.00

    Sir, I would recomend that you buy a Remington 700 ADL with the synthetic stock. You can get them for the same or slightly more money than a used 788 and have a much better action with an adjustable trigger. The biggest problem with the 788's is the way Remington made the bolts.
    The major problem was with the bolt handle, it was furnace brazed to the bolt body. There is a small shank that goes through the body at the rear of the bolt where the bolt shroud threads into the back of the body. Many of these bolts did not have the handle properly attached and break off the body. They can be reattached by tig welding, but you must be careful to line the threads on the bolt stud up properly with the threads in the bolt body. The big problem is when the bolt handle breaks off and breaks a piece off the side of the bolt body. Then you are looking for a bolt and they are almost impossible to find, and fetch a high price when you do find one.
    Other than the problem with the bolt and the non-adjustable trigger they were pretty good guns. Most of them were very accurate, especially considering their cost.
