marine shooting
hey guys, i just talked to my cousin who got back from marine training. He was telling me how he shot at 500 yards with plain steel sights and acheived around 12 to 14 inch groups on average and the best one about 5. I am very skepticle about this. has anyone ever experienced this or are they lying about distance or what. i cant even see a 5 inch target at 100 yards!, im taking him out next week so he can show me. I dont know what to expect. He was rated an expert shooter, but 5 inches at 500 yards with an m16 and standard sights is unrealistic.

I was in the usmc 83-87. Seems we fired the M-16 at 200, 300 and 500 yds for qualifications. Iron peep sights. It was very common to hit 10 out of 10 at the 500 yd range. Slow fire from the prone, I don't remember anyone actually measuring group sizes. They would put a white marker on the target indicating a hit and a red one in a hole that missed. The 500 yd marker was 12-14 inches in diameter and some guys would just leave it in the same spot as long as the shooter was hitting the man sized silohuette (sp) target. As long as the shooter is doing his part, especially important was reading the windage flags, the weapon was capable of very accurate fire. sight alignment, sight picture, focus on the front sight post and remember your BRASS, breathe, relax, aim, stop, squeeeeeeeeze the trigger. The 500 yard targets are fairly large, with the bullseye about 24" tall by 12" wide. It is certainly possible to consistently get small groups from an M16.

Sir Martin.....There is one area in which the USMC does not screw around...and that area is rifle marksmanship. If your cousin qualified expert in boot camp he is a "shooter" and I wouldn't doubt too much of what he said. And like bobski said just because you can't see a 5 inch target doesn't mean you can't shoot into a 5 inch target...now I would doubt that he put all 20 shots into 5" at 500 yards especially with M16 off the rack, but I'd bet on him being a player with his rifle. Thats excactly what he told me to. he said he used 5 shot mags, and explained the whole breathing process. I dono, next monday or tuesday we are taking him out to 500 yards to see if he can still do this. Its not going to be an m16, but an m14 National match, but supposebly its more accurate anyways, the recoil might affect him though. anyways, we'll see.0 -
I saw a guy do about the same thing on one those educational channels a while back. A story about the Navy Seals. A finely tuned weapon in the hands of a knowledgable man can be very impressive. We all know that. A someones signature here implies Ballistics Ballistics Ballistics. Beside even if it ain't true, any man in the uniform of the US military can feel free to pound sand up my butt anytime he wishes. Maybe he is just trying to keep us from worrying. Know what I mean?

[8D]Open sights at 500 yds, they don't use just the front sight- you FRAME the target in the front sight "EARS" and total breath and squeeze control, I start the squeeze on the third heart beat.[:)][:)][:o)][:D]

never been in the military but grew up with rifle in my hands 500 yds shot in not to difficult on a target that big with open sights!
five hundred yds is not really that far. i can shoot 1 moa with my ar15 easy...i have very very good eye sight and grew up with a rifle in my hands though0 -

Don't know about 500 yds but I just shot the crap out of one at 25ft with a $10 plastic dart gun made by Marksman. 10 out of 10 baby.

I'm one of those old jarheads that qualified with the M-1 at Parris Island.
I don't remember the size of the groups, but 14" may have been possible.
I shot expert on pre-record day, but next day was cold, rainy and windy, didn't do well.
Another guy and I shot highest in the platoon the day before and after goofing up on record day, the D.I. got in my face and chewed my ass out. I was just barely 17 and almost cried.
I would think you could do better with the M-1 than an M-16.

I watched a marine with an M-1 on wide world of sports (of sll places)back in the sixties. Remarkable rifle. But then thats why it is on most everyones wish list.

I was a Hollywood Marine- but even so, shooting M14s several of us fired possibles or near possibles at 500 yards. I don't know what the group was, because with slow fire the target goes down after each shot and gets scored. The one pulling the butts would have a better idea of group size. As I recall the target for 500 yards was a 20" circle, with a 10" circle inside it that was the 5 ring; but the measurements may have been 12" 5, 24" 4; That's getting to be a few years ago. 0 -
first off SEMPER FI.....I can remember pulling targets at the 500 and seeing the shooter placing the last 9 in the scoring disk after the first shot on a calm day with little to no wind call.......done it my self a few times....me and a friend used to go $1 a shot at the 500...think he still owes me a few $'s......I think the best part about the 500 is setting on the ready can watching the vaper trails go down range.......[:D]....F.Y.I....the targets are hit/miss now....no 5/4/3/2/1 rings anymore.......you can get 2's on only one course of fire now......
