.223 twist?
I have a .223 Sako with a 1 in 15 twist. What bullet weight should I use. This seems like an awfully slow twist for a .223 doesnt it?

The 40 to 50 gr bullets will probably work best.
The Remington 40XB, Husqvarna, Savage 24 and 340, Wichita and WEatherby Vanguard .223's all have a 1:14" twist. Sako's normally have a 1:12" twist in their factory barrels. Their .222 Mag's had a 1:15.5" twist in the 1972 models.

1 in 14, to 1 in 15 is about standard in long barrel 22 centerfire rifles. They are designed for the short projectiles, ie:50 grain family of projectiles. (read 59 and under) The faster twist rate barrels are for the longer projectiles, such as the 62, 68 grain, etc. Longer bullets will "keyhole" when fired from slower twist barrels. The long bullets will not de-stabilize until approx 100 yards when fired from the slow barrel. After proper break-in, try several different weights and brands, and see what works for you. Confused yet?

The standard for rifling is; the slowest twist required to stabilize the bullet. It you shoot nothing above 50gr, the 15" twist is fine.
I have observed problems with 14" twist and reduced load 55gr BT in .223. The rotational speed is what is needed to stabilize a bullet
a high velocity cartridge needs less twist than a low velocity to stabilize a long bullet. The standard twist for a Swift is 16".

Pre-Garcia Sako .223 Remington Chambered rifles came from the factory with a 1 in 12" twist as "Standard." Initially, when the .223 was being tested for production, Armalite was using a 1 in 14" twist which wouldn't stabilize the 55 gr. FMJ bullets, hence the 1 in 12" which is pretty much what is found on all commercial rifles as a "standard" to begin with. This is a compromise twist rate that works quite well with the 40 to 65 grain bullets......
I would double check to make sure about a 1 in 15" because that would have been non-standard twist rate.
