.308 India Surplus Ammo
I bought 1000 rds of this 86 production ammo because of price. Shooting it out of a M1A National Match (trying anyway). Out of a 20 round mag I get around 8 jams (bolt will not close fully). I know, I know I shouldn't use this ammo in a Nat. Match Rifle. I don't shoot matches. Shoot for myself fun only.
Randomely measured O/A length of 50 and found that they vary by up to .010" in length (bullet tip to base).
Also many are dented around the neck area and they are filthy. I am constantly cleaning the chamber.
I am now individually cleaning each one. Using a lathe with a collet to fit the bullet and cleaning with scotch-brite.
Getting rid of the dented ones.
Anyone else out there having this problem with this ammo?

My club bought some for the juniors to shoot. I took one look at the stuff and decided it wasn't going in any of the rifles the kids were using. The pi$$-poor quality control on that ammo almost guarantees an accident waiting to happen. I'm sure it's good enough to issue to the Indian Army to attempt to kill themselves or enemy Pakistanis along their borders but....life is cheap over there....I wouldn't take a chance with my students. I bought a case when it first came out. Junk. mine was clean at least. in my m1a it shot 5-6" "groups", but funtioned ok. in my FN FAL it would not function reliable and gave 8" or worse groups. Bad stuff.

Futher comments on the Indian Mfg .308. I have had and shot the ammo being offered by Century Arms, this ammo ranges in dates from 92-02, I have found it to be good shooting quality. It is not as accurate as other mfg(4-5 " at 100 yds) , but will function well in my M1A and FNFAL. I have had none of the problems mentioned above. I believe the 80's dated lots is where the problem lies. For general plinking is can't be beat. 0 -
I use this stuff to just foul my barrel and dont even bother looking down the scope when i do. Its horrible. 0 -
Your replys put a grin on my face and made me laugh knowing that I am not alone with this crappy ammo. And your right about some of it not being safe to shoot, I have(after polishing) found some brass with deep pits (corrosion)a real potential for case seperation after ingite in the chamber.

I use it in my bolt actions. It's not great, and I wouldn't use it in a semi auto, but I don't say it's dangerous; you should inspect ammo anyhow!

I have run a few thousand through my FAL. When I built the rifle I set my headspace up so it was intentionally loose. I eats it all, even the Indian with the oozing black goo. 5-6" groups with this stuff, rifle does 2" with most surplus. No problems, other than inaccuracy. 98 and 00 dates.

I bought a case of Indian ammo with a 1997 date and the NATO symbol on the headstamp and have fired several hundred rounds through my Cetme Sporter.
It probably isn't the most accurate in surplus ammo I have used, but it is reliable and fairly clean. I cleaned my barrel after one shooting event and there wasn't much residue to be removed. With a new semi-auto there has not been one failure to feed or failure to eject.
I don't shoot matches but was able to put 10 rounds into about 4 inches at 50 yards which is about the best I can shoot. These rounds have worked out great for plinking.
I also cleaned several hundred rounds in my tumbler and no dents, cracks, splits, or holes. This stuff must vary quite a bit from lot to lot.

My late friend bought 4 pallets of it when it was first introduced by Century Arms and we shot many thousand rounds with no problems. Dirty as all get out but clean up afterwards and no problems. We sold 2 pallets from his estate. We never had a misfire or jam out of any of it through Garrands, Fals, G-3s, Cetmes, HKs, sportin rifles, or any other thing we shot. Now with that said, Century offered it again later and my late friend bought 2 pallets of it and we had some problems from that pallet. My late friend did sell all of it before he died at cost just to get rid of it. I have several thousand rounds of the early batch still and use it from time to time. It is not match shooting stuff by no means but rather cheap plinking stuff.

Humm....I bought 200 rds of this stuff about five years at the gunshop and have never opened the case. Marked 7.62 with #99xxxxxx which I assume was made in 1999. Now I might open it up and look at it...but not shoot it. Got it for $20! Thought it was a deal then....reading this thread, now not so much[B)] 0
