CHARTER ARMS 44 SPECIAL BULLDOG
We were poking around pawn shops this afternoon looking for whatever.Found a Charter Arms Bulldog in 44 special.Gun is in excellent condition.It has rubber grips on it.Are they any good? I remember when they came out years ago and they were quite pouplar at the time.How do they hold up with wimpy loads? It is very light in weight,so is it gonna bite me? They want $200.00 plus tax for it.Crown jewell,or pig in a poke? What say ye,

I have one and it's a great little carry pistol. Don't laugh at a .44spl, it'll lay any man flat. I found that mine was fairly accurate as 2" snubbies go. Yes, the recoil did bite a bit, but, when you are shooting a .44spl in such a small frame you have to expect that. And, honestly, how much are you going to shoot it to really worry about the recoil being a bit stout?
If the gun is in good condition with little wear and few if any marks, scratches ect... then I'd say $200 is a somewhat fair price. I'd ask them if they would take mabye $180 + tax for it but I'd still probably buy it at $200.

Is the one you saw in blue or stainless? Did it have a 2 or a 3 inch barrel? Shrouded ejector rod? My favorite is the older guns in either blue or stainless with the 3 inch tapered barrel and unshrouded ejector rod. I have a S&W in .44 special, it's nice, but when I reach for a gun to carry, it's usually the Charter Arms Bulldog. These are great little guns. An older one in excellent condition is worth the $200 or a little more in my opinion.

Buy it.
I prefer the factory rubber grips over wood, plastic or rubber Pachmiers.
Because of stiff recoil it's a good idea to grind flat the rear of the grip to about 1/16" of the backstrap. Use a grindstone or sanding disk.
By flattening the wedge shape, you have more surface area acting against your palm. An additional benefit is a tighter hold on the grip.
I've fired very heavy handloads in this revolver and prefer 200 grain bullets or lighter over the original 246 grain bullet in any loading.0 -
I have a one nib that I picked at a local auction. I paid $145 at an auction that I felt everything was high. Maybe I Got the one good buy?
I bough a colt 1903 and ruger P-89 both for $200 this year. I have to say oiker!

I was not implying that the 44 special was a wimpy load.I would be downloading it so it would not be beating me or the gun up.I may go and look at it again now that i have some more information on it.

One of those guns on my "wish I never sold it" list! A light target load will still make a fist size hole. I carried mine with the Win. Silvertips, not the most accurate round past 20ft, but it only takes one![;)]

Hi, This gun is also on my "wish I didn't sell it list". I apologize for not checlking a ballistic chart, but if I remember correctly, it has an "out the barrel" speed and power profile similar to the .45ACP - my personal favorite round. I carry a sub-compact in .45 auto, but I used to keep the Pug as my nightstand gun. My thoughts are that it will go bang every time you pull the trigger, only takes 1 hit to put 'em down, and if it's really worth $170 or $180, are you going to miss the difference when you're 6 feet under? I was very happy to see that Charter Arms brought them out again, but by then I already had a Taurus in the same config (and it does just what the pug did, only cost me a little more!!). The Taurus has been sold so when my fiancial situation gets out of it's dive, I'll go looking for a Pug again
One last thought - it would kill my hand when I went to the range to keep up the feeling, but I only shot 1 box to make sure I hit the center at 7 yrds and and it was the last gun I shot during that session after I was done with my "real" target pratice. I loaded very smooth loads that were accurate and didn't hurt my hand, but never trusted my life to them so my last shots were always what was in the gun when in it was in the night stand.
May 2005 be the best year yet for all who read this and all who believe in the Constitution and don't want to take my guns away!

Yep.....$200 is just about right. If you can haggle it down a few more bucks, so much the better.
Great little carry gun. Yep, it bites (like all small, light, big bore guns), but .44 Special is an excellent man-stopper.
You could do a lot worse for a CCW.

It's worth the two bills if you really want it but they should take a bit less.
I have the stainless version with the bobbed hammer spur. Paid $185 for it,
with some finish scratches that I polished out.0 -
Thanks you again for the replies.I may go back tomorrow and look at it again.They also had a very nice early New Model Super Blackhawk there i was looking at.I just bought one the other day,but this one is real nice.The other one is just a shooter.
