old artillery shells

I would call them bullets except for the size...1st one is 15 7/8" high, 4" diameter at center, and 3 1/2" diameter at the base,...2nd one is 16 1/2" high, 5 1/8" diameter at the center and 4 1/8" diameter at the base. They have sitting in my garage for years. What are they and are they worth anything other than scrap metal? Thanks for any help...Semper Fi....an armed society is a polite society...

    First one sounds kinda like a 105mm projectile.
    I would only be guessing without photos.

    Now the big question. Are they certified inert? Fuzed? Anything inside them, like maybe a greenish playdoh material that can be dug into with a thumbnail? (use nothing metallic)

    usmcaz - welcome to the zoo! Stuff this big is way out of my collecting field, but I have a buddy who collected it for forty plus years. If you can provide photos and the verbiage on the base / projo I'm sure I can get you an answer. The verbiage alone would probably do the job. You could also try this site to ID them yourself; Tony is a true expert in this field:

    Yes, they are worth more than scrap value, and it could be substantially more, depending on ID, condition and the like. My buddy can give us a realistic value.

    One caveat - if, as p3 indicated, these are in any way live, ferget about it and call your EOD some time last week. Even the fuse on a large shell contains enough HE to put you on the wrong side of ATF, to say nothing of possibly more restrictive state / local regulations depending on your location. For that matter, even inert specimens in some PC locales est verboten, but if the "az" in your user name equates to a state abbreviation, you are safe on that score.
