Helwan quality??
I am looking for a cheeper semi auto to carry in the pickup. I cannot justify paying $300-$600 for a gun that will probably just stay in the console of the pickup it's entire life. Not many bad guys where I live. Is the Helwan reliable, and is it fairly accurate? IF so to what degree? Thanks Steve

I have found the steel in the Helwan to be somewhat soft, and wear quickly. Trigger pull is atrocious, and a little polishing will soon have unwanted results. (BANG!) Please listen to 22WRF. He is right on target, and is obviously your friend.

For a little more, you very well could find a very nice used Ruger P85 or 89, a used or near new CZ or clone thereof ( like the Magnum Research Baby Eagle). Any of these and some others are nearly faultless, durable, easy parts. I have both the Baby Eagle and the P89 and both are excellent shooters and absolutely dependable. 0 -

Stay away from the Helwans. For the $'s they are junk. You can get a Mak or a Star BM for less and they are much better. My opinion. 0 -
I would get the Makarov. Good double action, or single action, light weight, reliable.

I got a Helwan for $80 and it was a fine shooter. If I shot it alot it may have worn out as others say it has soft metal. I traded it up and made out well- never really shot it much.
If you are looking for a cheap carry pistol that you don't intend on shooting much the Helwan is just fine- don't pay over $100.
If you plan on shooting a bit get the Makarov. There are many aftermarket parts out there for it.
Next one above the Makarov would be the Argentine 1911 clones. Cheap and Colt parts will interchange with them.0 -
Well, here we go again. Guess I'm in for another flogging from the "real" experts on the forum. Nothing wrong with a Helwan. A fellow bought one here where I live (not from me) and just shot the **** out of it. Bought lots and lots of ammo from me and the local chain store. Eventually it came in for rebluing. It was subsequently sold to another owner who shot the **** out of it, and he eventually brought it in for rebluing as he had kept it under the seat of his pick-em-up truck where it rusted royally. At this time I replaced the recoil spring, and out it went again, and ain't seen it since. You could do worse. BUT
I'd still prefer a Star or Mak.0 -
When I had my FFL, I sold many Helwans. They are copies of the Beretta 951, and reliability was never an issue.The finish was really rough, but they worked.
