7mm-08

Any feedback from you on 7mm-08 vs .308.

Most likely if getting the 7mm I'll be hand loading.
(no I don't have a manuel....and an aquantance will be doing the loading since he's done that for 22 years now)

Is there much difference in ballistics? Exspecially down range.

    I am shooting the Remington 140 grain bullet. Whitetail deer at 300 yards would be the longest shot. What would be a good way to sight in this rifle?

    rem 700vls is/was offered in that chambering.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    Just my opinion - I think the 7mm-08 is over-shadowed by the production of the .280 which does not have a big following either. I've not seen the .08 offered in other than Remingtons and Mausers - I probably would not pass one up if offered, but not really after one...

    All makers offer the 7mm-08 in their short rifles but none offer it in rifles built for accuracy. The first ones showed up at silhouetta matches as custom wildcats and absolutely rule. My question is why none of the majors have picked up on this.

    Steyr Pro-Hunter in 7-08 is the most accurate production rifle I have ever shot.

    Remington is chambering there LVSF in 7-08 this year

    The reason is 7-08 is not a varmint caliber. Center fire 22's are, so is 6mm and for me, in Arizona where shots are really, really long, I use a heavy barreled 25-06. 100 gr boattail comes out of the 26in tube over 3400 fps. For deer I switch to a 115gr at 3250fps. Check the drop on those loads against anything. Look at a Savage 25-06 heavy varmint - life will be good.

    I've been a little fustrated with that myself. All the big manufacturers will make heavy barrel .308's, 30-06's and even 300 win mags. But not a heavy barrel to be found in what could be a premier long range target rifle, the 7mm-08. For whatever reason (marketing, no doubt) the 7mm Rem Mag is king of the 7mm's and most other's are overshadowed. It's the appeal of a hunting rifle. Maybe with everyone making HB and varmint specific rifles it will really come into it's own when someone gets serious about chambering it.

    Id have the feeling Remington made the 7-08 in Varmit HB. Mine is in the rack. Walnut stock, no sights, but drilled and tapped. I woiuld say it is factory, and VG condition. GW. gwvr@bresnan.net

    I once had a Browning Bolt rifle with a heavy barrel in 7mm08. Sold it & bought a Browning lever rifle to hunt with because of the weight difference.
