CMP Rifle Grades

O'k I'm ready to buy a CMP rifle, I want one to shoot and am not worried if it's ever going to worth a million dollars or if it's a collector rifle which one do I want. The Service grade, Rack grade, collectors or the greek or danish one. Remember I want a shooter (preferrably dependable).

    No question here: You want the US Service Grade rifle. (Not Greek, not Danish)

    If you can go to the store at Port Clinto, Ohio you can pick out the rifle that you want instead of buying by mail and getting whatever rifle is the next in line for shipment. I managed to get a rack grade that was better than any of the Service grades that I looked at. It had a muzzle of 1.0 and a 1.5 at the breech. It also had a better than average stock that matched and was a 1945 to boot. I would have thought it should have been in the Collector grade rack but I didn't argue -just gave them my money real fast.

    I'VE BOUGHT SOME OF EACH (NO COLLECTOR GRADE !!!$$$), IF YOU JUST WANT A SHOOTER AND $ AREAN ISSUE GO WITH THE RACK GRADE. IF YOU WANT A REAL GOOD SHOOTER BUY A SERVICE GRADE. THE GREEK RACK GRADES CAN HAVE A ROUGH STOCK BUT A LITTLE ELBOW GREASE AND SOME LINSEED OIL WILL TAKE CARE OF THAT.

    I have a few questions regarding this program:
    a. What are the requirements and does my being active duty military qualify?
    b. What are the "grades" mentioned and thier respective prices?
    c. Is the m-1 garrand (spelling?)the only available firearm?

    earl. Your active duty does help you past one of the quailifications.
    But you also have to be a member of a gun club recognized by the CMP. You can join the Garand Collecors Association to qualify as a member of a gun club. Go to www.garandcollector.org and join them. Print out an application, fill it out, and mail it in. Be sure to check the box for them to automatically notify the CMP of your membership. It takes about 2 weeks for the GCA to notify the CMP.

    If you're looking for a 'shooter' get a US Service Grade Garand. (not Greek or Danish)

    They also sell 1903 Springfields for 400 bucks. They're covered in cosmoline so you'll have to do some good cleaning!

    A friend of mine bought a 1903A3 Remington from them. It was rebarreled in 1942, and he swears it hasn't been fired since the rebarreling.

    You can't go wrong dealing with the CMP.

    That Garand collector assn cost $25/yr. I just joined the California Rifle & Pistol assn online for $18/yr. I called the CMP & confirmed
    that they do ship to your home (even in Kalifornia) so I will not have to pay a local dealer to recieve it for me. You do need to have a form notorized but my bank does that for free. So I am well into the process.

    You can find a keeper in any of the grades. If you go with a Greek rack grade instead of a US service grade you just have $200 left over to buy a case of ammo. If you are in a position to go to the CMP North Store...do it. If not just put a post-it on your mail in application with what you would like. If you ask for the lowest TE and MZ possible the guys down in Alabama will come through for you. You may get a POS stock with that nice TE and MZ but that can easily be remedied with $20-$30 and an online visit to Dougs Stock Pile.

    I rarely buy a service grade. Early this year I bought an American rack grade with the intention of putting it into National Match configuration. One trip to the range convinced me otherwise. I now use it solely for my J.C. Garand matches. It shoots far better than any other stock M1 I own...including my M1D. A lot of shooters have gone for the Danish Service grade with VAR barrel and these are starting to command a premium if you can find one privately for sale. These VAR barreled Danish M1's are becoming THE rifle of choice at J.C.Garand Matches. The CMP currently has no more VAR barreled M1's for sale. Finally I have matched out two Greek rack grades(and they do look terrible!!) and those rifles are capable of holding as close to sub minute of angle as you can get. I'm not saying they will hold half minute of angle but I have young students shooting and routinely recording scores in the 80's and 90's with them in service rifle competition.

    Finally to what Neal said...in a way he is right...if you do go with a US service grade you stand about a 98 percent chance of NOT being disappointed. If you go with a Greek rack grade you have a 50 percent chance of disappointment. Do you feel lucky?...Well do you? Beach
