I am getting a 8 3/8 S&W 500.....I know it shoots hard....here's my question...is it a good idea to put a scope on it and try to hunt with it or target shoot (EXPENSIVE AS THAT IS) or just carry it as a backwoods backup....if a scope is good what do any experts reccomend a shoulder or hip holster

Yeh, its a bit much for a back-up. You can kill anything in the western hemisphere with that gun.
Its already heavy enough without a scope. I would leave it off. I think the only thing it could be a back-up for is a 460 nitro express. Just my thoughts.

Whatever you do, make sure you wear ear protection when firing the gun. A friend of mine lost a significant amount of hearing firing his while hunting.

As an observation, I would think the weight of the scope would tame the muzzle rise and recoil abit. 0 -
A scope is the best way to go if you are looking for the most accuracy out of any giving gun. A well designed shoulder holster is a very convienient way to carry a gun that big..........A 83/8" anything on your hip makes it kinda hard to set down on much of anything.
Just my opinion is all.

Personal opinion ... to darn big for backup, maybe a 4 inch model.
In the configuration you've listed what you have is a hunting revolver. Now what are you planning on hunting?
The 500 is not really a long range piece, but if you have the skills you could use it to 100 yards or better, and if your going to be doing that then you'll be firing from a supported position and a scope will be a benefit. If you looking at under a 100 yards, especially the 50 yard +/- range, scope may prove to be of marginal benefit. In heavy brush ... keep the open sights.
You have "enough gun" for anything that dwells in this hemisphere.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -

Go with the scope and a shoulder rig. Would take down anything you would want to hunt with a handgun. And maybe some things you would not want to hunt with a handgun. 0 -
S&W offers a real nice nylon holster on their website that will hold the 8-3/8" with or without a scope, and can hook up as a shoulder, supported belt, or over the chest holster. I bought it ($69 as I recall) and really like it.
