Platinum Tip=Black Talon?
I picked up two boxes of .44 MAg 250 grain PTHP at the gunshop the other day. Someone on here, can't remember who, said he thought that thePTHP were the same as the Black Talons. Is there any truth to this?

You're in luck. I happen to have a box here to refer to. The cartridge case will be nickel plated. The primer may or may not have red sealant around it and the base of the cartridge will say
"W-W Super .44 REMMAG". The bullet itself will be hollow point with six striations (notches) and will be dark gray to black in color. I think what you probably have, if factory is Winchester Silver Tip.
The "evil" Black Talon was another red herring by the press. PMC has the Star Fire, Hornady has the Gold Dot, which are similiar in principle. Also, my understanding is that Winchester redeigned the bullet, as it had some failures, and their premium line of hunting cartridges, the SXT,is even more potent. The rumor that the black talon would penetrate body armor is that...rumor. It still is a soft point. The late Ranger line from Winchester was supposed to be the law enforcement version of black talon, but occasionally it was offered to the public as well.0 -
I heard that the SXT designation came about as an abbreviation of 'Same Exact Thing'.
