    You can double check it with a magnet ,it will be faint ,but will have magnetic value

    You may not want to do that. USGI armor piercing is great target ammo, almost as accurate as USGI National Match .30-06. As long as you're shooting against a safe backdrop, there's no need to worry. I usually see it sold as de-linked machine gun ammo, & it sells for a premium over USGI M2 ball.

    On the other hand, tracer & incendiary ammo are on my "throw out" list.

    If I remember correctly, this was the standard issue round for use in M1 rifles during WWII. It's good stuff.

    If you're concerned about the legal issues of possessing armor piercing ammunition, unless it's specifically banned in your area there's no problem with having AP rifle ammo. Handgun AP rounds are a different matter.

    Check out the date of manufacture on the case rim. If its world war two era it will have corrosive primers. These can damage the barrel of your rifle if you dont clean it properly.

    That ammo is AP but will not completely penetrate 1/2" steel plate, but will go thru 1/4".

    bglob6, If the date stamp on your armor piercing ammo dates it as WWII you really ought to re-think throwing it away. It sells for about .75 to $1.00 a round in local gun shows and sometimes more on gunbroker. That stuff is too expensive to shoot or throw away.

    bg, depending on the loading, it could be worth some bucks. What is the headstamp? Condition? Number of rounds? Any extra cannelures on the bullets? As others have noted, even the most basic '06 AP typically brings $1 / rd at retail if in good condition.

    Black tipped M1 Ball and unpainted,M2 Ball were standard issue beyond WW2, in Korea. M1 Ball only was was to be used in rifles in combat.
    Blue tipped API and red tipped tracers were also available there at that time.

    There is 2 green ammo pouches,marked cal.30 ap M2 8 round clips,lot T W-40556,total of 11,8 round clips.Shells are marked T W 5 on headstamps

    Why would you throw those out? Its perfectly LEAGAL to have. I bought some SS109 for my .223, those are armor piercing. I don't understand why you would throw them away? [V]

    I was assumeing they were illegal,I only hunt,dont do much other shooting.
