Geha Mauser Shotgun

I bought a 12 ga Geha Remo Shotgun and I have heard that they should not be shot because the bolts are weak. Is this true because I was pretty sure that a 98 Mauser action was stout enough for magnum rifle calibers, so why wouldnt it be alright for a 12 ga? 0 -
It seems that the action is bored out so that the only recoil lug is the safety lug on the rear of the bolt.
The bolt face has a tendency to fall off, making it very dangerous because the firing pin was still in place.

I vote with you; should be perfectly o.k., for exactly the reason you stated. This is assuming proper ammo for the chamber. When in doubt, do the tire test: Using an old tire, in a safe surrounding, insert the butt of the gun into the inside of the tire (where the inner tube or air used to be) and lay the front end across the other side of the tire. Take some twine and tie it around the forend and around the tire, and it doesn't hurt to tie the butt into the tire also. Now, attach a 15-20 ft. piece of twine to the trigger and get back, back behind something is even better (like a tree!) and pull the twine. The tire may lift up and tip some when fired, but it is unlikely that your gun will be damaged, and neither will you. Wear your shooting glasses and hearing protection. Shoot it at least twice. 0 -
Well the guy who I bought it from has fired over a box of shells through it and all is ok. I just worry about the bolt flying back on me. Is the thrid lug enough to ensure this wont happen if I take caution about the bolt face. And what ammo would be appropriate for it? I am guessing nnothing above dove and quail load. 0 -
Shotguns operate at a much lower pressure than do rifles--assuming everything is working properly. There are many shotguns with a lock-up weaker than one Mauser lug. I'd never advocate shooting shells in it more powerful than those in use when the gun was originally sold. It sounds like you are worried, have lost confidence, and should probably re-sell it or hang it on the wall. 0 -
Just asking peopes opinions. I hear people saying they are junk and others that they are good. I agree with the people who say they are safe and I can see how they got a bad rep because of the boltheads tendancy to fall off.I hear the same about Ithaca 51's and they have tons of fans. The guy I got it from shot it not too long ago with dove and quail loads and this thing is easily in 95% to 98% condition. I love mausers and if it doesnt shoot well it is a neat part to my mauser collection. I like to shoot all my guns and I always believe in seaching out others opinions and experiences. I figure 25 shells is a good test firing and feel confident in any mauser action. I mean the small ring spanish mausers have less lugs than standard ones just like this shotgun. And I figure if those spanish mausers handle 7mm mauser and 7.62 nato rounds that low power shotshells wont be a problem. 0 -
I've worked on several of these over the years (even made a bolt head or two)and have never seen a damaged one from firing (out side of cracked stocks). like the others have said, its weak point is the bolt head; the only thing holding it in place is the extractor tension and a couple of good intentsions. I would rate them for any ammo short of baby mags. 0 -
You might want to check to see if the chamber is a full 2_" long.
