What would you use?

What rifle and caliber would you recommend for both PA Whitetail and Black Bear? The Bear are usually in the 300# size.

    You can't go much wrong using a .30-06 for almost anything....it's certainly the most versatile hunting round here in the U.S.

    However, for the fairly short ranges (150 yds. or less) common in the PA woods, a very nice combo is the Marlin 336 lever gun in .35 Remington. It's a nice brush-busting cartridge adequate for both deer and black bear.

    I'd say anything between and including a .30-30 winchester to a .30-06 will do the job easily. For pistols, .41mag, .44mag, .357mag, 500s&w (easily).

    IN HEAVY BRUSH AND FOR SHOTS 200YDS AND UNDER FOR DEER AND BEAR. 444S MARLIN WITH 240gr HOLLOWPOINRS WOULD BE MY CHOICE. GUIDES MARK THIS FOR THEIR CHOICE FOR BEAR.

    You could hardly go wrong with a 280 Remington in a Model 700.
    Remember that the right bullet counts more than the right caliber.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

    i would not want to accidentally piss off a 300 pound black bear at 150 yards in brush. Go with 300 winchester mag or if you have the money then get a Lazeroni. The 308 warbird has as much velocity and energy at 200 yards as the 30-06 has at muzzle. If i hunted i would definatly invest in a lazeroni.

    Not everybody has $6k to drop on a bolt action Lazzeroni rifle. .30-06 is more than sufficient to take anything on the North American continent. A .308 will work just fine too. And it dosen't matter if you spend $300 or $30,000 on your rifle.

    lever guns 35 rem , 444marlin, 45-70
    bolt actions 280 up to what ever you can shoot good
    semi autos, again 280 up to 338 mag

    Another vote for the 30/06.
    Light to heavy ammo is readily available.

    The gene pool needs chlorine.

    30/06 is hard to beat anywhere on the NA continent. It didn't get the following it enjoys by failing in the field.

    Hard to argue with most opinions already here. If you prefer a short action, I would suggest the .308.

    I handload and get along with mine quite well. One can work it up to handle most N.A. game. For what you say you want to do, I think it would be the ticket.

    Thanks for all the replys. I'm leaning towards the 30-06 due to availability of guns and ammo, but you got curious about some of the others. I'll need to check them out.

    I'm not sure what sort of terrain you'd be hunting in- I've read that PA has long shots, short shots, and inbetween. If they're short, likely the quarters are close and a light little 308 would be just the thing. If the ranges are longer, then a 30-06 or 280 with a 24" barrel would be what I'd think to be about right.
