Repairing barrel damage?
I just acquired a Stevens 311 20 ga. with minor damage to the left barrel about 8 in. from the muzzle. My "smith" feels it is safe to shoot, but advised checking it after each shot. It looks like it was struck with something that left a slight indentation.
Gunparts shows them for $80 but are out of stock. Is there anyone out there that can rework a barrel....double barrel......to correct this problem? Thanks, Bill

Small "dink's" in shotgun barrels are fairly common, and there is a tool that can be used to press out most of the dent from the inside.
Depending on the size of the dent, it is A-safe to shoot, B-should be repaired, or C-time to scrap the barrel. Which one yours is can only be determined by a hands on inspection by a experanced smith.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Most "smiths" have a dent remover on hand, or at least should as it's a very commen repair..Brownells has them in their catalog.....

Thank you for the advice. I received a positive note from Bill and Stan Baker Sports in Seattle and he said...."No Problem!" I'll take the barrel to him for a quote, but it sounds encouraging.

Most competant gunsmiths will have a full gauge set of barrel dent raisers on hand. 20 minutes and $20 should take care of it. I did 3 dents on my LC Smith in about 20 minutes with a borrowed dent remover.
