Winchester Auto Shotgun Question

I am helping my cousin who is computer illiterate to the extreme look for a shotgun on this site. He has heard and taken for fact that Winchester autoloading shotguns especially the model 1400 and older ones like the model 50 are "Junk". Some one told him that they jam up easily and have other feed problems in cold weather. I myself am skeptical of this and was just wondering if there is fact to this or if it is just a bunch of B.S. I see model 1400's around all the time for a good price and knowing him as a "frugle" man I think a 1400 would be a good buy for him as his bang around hunting gun.

    A Win. 1400, for "Banging Around" it might be acceptable!
    BUT, as a dependable "Hunting" gun; it leaves a
    whole lot to be desired!
    Alloy parts = problems.
    Spend a little more and get a gun to use, depend upon
    and be proud of.

    Depends what year. In my honest opinion They were made from 1964-1981
    Not sure of the year they started production in Japan. They still shoot well, Just don't hold the value.

    That's about it; my 1200 pumpgun in 20ga still has never failed to work.

    no, model 50's are junk. sell your junk to me! [:p] 1400's have had problems in the past. it is hit or miss. the older and more used a 1400 is, the more likely something is going to be worn on it. if yuu can find one close to new, it will serve you fine.

    Hello Wehrmacht_45! I have to agree with Bobski on the fact that a Winchester Md 50 is NOT junk!! There are two main versions, the Standard and the Featherweight. The Standard has a steel receiver, and the Featherweight has an aluminum receiver. I would stay away from a Featherweight if it's in less than about 95% condition, while great to shoot with Dove and Quail loads, Skeet or Trap loads, the standard 1 1/4 oz lead loads or Magnum loads will beat the receiver to death. Even the standard Md 50 you shouldn't shoot Magnums thru it. This gun was quite innovative in it's day1 the first winchester with interchangeable barrels, this gun is recoil operated not gas, and it had a stationary barrel. For being recoil operated it's very smooth. the only thing that happens over time is the "timing" will need to be adjusted. however parts can be found, they are starting to get expensive.
