Ruger P90 Problem
Just picked up a Ruger p90 off of GunBroker in "excellent" shape for a good price. My problem is I discovered that for some reason it will only work single action. I own three other p series pistols and have never had this happen before. I also cannot break it down to see what the problem is. I push the extractor down and try to take the slide off in the usual way but the slide will only come forward about 1/4 inch and stays there. Any suggestions before I return it or take it to a gunsmith?

Hey guys, just got back from firing my P90 and my magazine release completly fell out.. I slide it back in but that's a no go, it just sits in there on the loose side.. So i'm assuming there was something within the gun to hold that inplace to lock in/release magazines. Any Idea's?.. Wondering if this is something i could potentially fix myself or if i have to take it to a gunsmith to have em fix it? Anyways,any suggestions would be greatly apperciated. 0 -
There is a coil spring that secures the magazine release in place, the springs cost is nominal...degree of difficulty in replacing the spring if you have not done so before.......10 on a scale of 1 to 10, the spring has "legs"...one goes thru a hole in the release the other bent end goes in a hole in the recess in the grip frame where the release fits....GOOD LUCK 0 -
Well Darn.. It's sad because i just bought it and i've only shot it once.. owell i guess stuff happens occasionally.. you think it would be an expensive fix to take into a smith? or even a store if they feel comfortable doing it? 0 -
It is an easy fix .....if you have the part, takes less than a minute to install, IF you've done it before, unless you have the good fortune to live near a gunsmith that has a VERY good selection of Ruger parts, the problem will be in finding the part or ordering it right at Christmas, most places shut down over the holidays, 0 -

Ruger would probably have the part, I got a circlip from them for a Ruger 22 years ago.

yep haha.. anyways my friend was going over the area and we found the little spring.. just need an idea of how to put it back in properly. 0 -
You will need a set of small needle nose pliers or a locking hemostat.....remove the slide and grips, it is best if you can secure the grip frame in a vise so that you have both hands free, examine the mag release, you will see a small hole top to bottom thru the release,this is where the straight leg of the spring goes, place the release in the milled cavity it rides in, hold it securely with one hand while slipping the straight spring leg in the hole in the release, once you have that in place, the other end of the spring (the bent end) is placed in the hole in the right side of the milled cavity in the grip frame,
CAUTION!
before you do any of this....make sure that a section of the straight leg of the spring is not broken off, as this what usually happens when the mag release fails.

Send it back to Ruger.They will fix the problem and anything else they find.I had a P-90 that I abused and neglected for years and never had any problems with it. 0 -
Any idea how much it would cost to send it to ruger to fix?.. if it's reasonable i'll do that but i would like to avoid spending an excessive amount of money :-/ 0 -
Call Ruger and ask to speak to Mike Smisko, he will probably send you a prepaid box to send the gun back in, fix it, and ship it back out at no cost to you. You can also ask the guys at Rugerforum.com as they know alot more than me.
