How do you find out the year of production for S&W revolvers?

Nothing available on the net that I know of. Standard reference is the Supica & Nahas book, "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson".

To add to Rufe's reply ... if you are not getting into S&W collecting and really just need to make a casual reference now and then, try your local library ... odds are very good that they have a copy in their reference section, or that they can obtain a copy via inter-library lending.
The book is called: Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 2nd Edition. And the authors are Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. Publisher is Krause Publications and last but not least the Library of Congress Catalog Number is 96-75277
Of course you can post the particulars of the gun on here and get the info. Include the Model number, if known, caliber, general description and the serial number. If you belong to the "clan of the secret serial numbers" substitute "X's" for the last 2 digits of the s/n. If your looking for value information then you will need to be very descriptive about the finish and condition, and it is best to post quality pictures of the piece.

Thank you for the information. I have been trying to start a collection of S&W revolvers and so far have a model 1905 38 special with a 4 inch barrel nickel finnish and real pearl grips, a pre model number military and police with blued finnish and 5 inch barrel, a model 10-5 with blued finnish 6 inch barrel that looks like it has never been fired, and another model 10-5 with a 4 inch barrel that also look to be unfired complete with matching numbered box, papers, and the unused cleaning brush and rod still in the plastic bag. I dont think either of the last two have ever been fired and they both have pinned barrels. I dont have much extra cash very often but when I do I am always looking for another one to add to the collection. When I can afford it I will try to get the book that was mentioned above. The BookFinder site has both new and used copies for sale between $16 & $23. If you intend to countinue collecting S & W's, it's the "bible".
