remington wingmaster

a 12 gauge remington wingmaster - not sure what year model - it's a 1970 something and a full choke barrel, vent rib site - how much is it worth?

    I just bought one from a guy. Barrel markings indicate dec. 1952 It has been refinshed once.....bad job. The buttplate has no other word than ugly. Serial is 264xxxV Bluing is around 80% What would you pay for it?

    Books have them at $200-225 from "good" to Excellent. Seems a little high to me based on fixed choke and price of new pump guns, but I guess you pay for the 870 logo. Check sales thru GB and see what they are asking.

    A 1970's vintage 870 "Wingmaster" should be worth twice what a new matte finished synthetic stocked "special field" is worth.. IMHO

    THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY. I INHHERITED THIS GUN 5 YEARS AGO .MY DAD WAS THE 2ND OWNER AND TRADED ANOTHER SHOTGUN FOR IT IN 1981.HE TOOK VERY GOOD CARE OF ALL HIS GUNS.I WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW IT,S HISTORY AND IT,S WORTH.

    the 870 Wingmaster has been around since about 1950, yours should be worth about $250 maybe as high as 300 to the right person , they are one of the best pump shotguns ever built [:D] they will last a life time if they are taken care of , so you may want to hang on to it and pass it on to your kids some day[:D]

    $250-$300 is about right for these guns. I have a 1971 870 Wingmaster 20 gauge - with a fixed full choke and vent rib - in like-new condition. I also inherited mine..

    If you're curious, send or e-mail your serial number to Remington, and they'll tell you the year of manufacture.

    Post the letter code that's stamped on the left side chamber area of your barrel. If the barrel is original it's a simple matter to date the gun without having to contact the factory.

    Strangely, my barrel was a couple of years off (if you look at the lettered charts) from the date of manufacture given to me by Remington based on serial number. The barrel has never been replaced, and my Grandfather won the gun NIB, so I know that for a fact. Not sure if they repeat the numbers every so often?

    ON THE LEFT SIDE X 1 7 ON THE RIGHT SIDE REP IS STAMPED ON THE BARREL. I JUST HAPPEN TO HAVE A 16 YEAR OLD HUNTING PARTNER. MY BOY AND I HAVE HUNTED TOGETHER FOR 7 YEARS AND HE WILL BE THE NEXT OWNER OF THIS GUN.

    If what you're seeing is actually XI instead of X1, your barrel was manufactured December '76.

    I'm not sure about the number 7, but if what you're seeing is really a 2 that was poorly stamped this would indicate that the barrel was sold by Remington as an accessory item.

    The REP in a circle is Remington's barrel proof mark.
