SMLE #4 Mk1 Rifling
Just curious:
I recently purchased a beautiful #4 Mk1 Savage Enfield with 2 band rifling- I understand that they could come with 6 and 8 as well- is there any significance to this? Nothing on-line seems to indicate otherwise, except that they exist in these formats. I am aware of early American experiments with fewer rifling bands in 'oval' patterns that were thought to improve on accuracy. Thought it looked unique. Thanks for any info!

The last two groove No.4 I ran across was in a batch in a Big 5 Sporting Goods store in about 1988. It sure does give you pause for thought when you look down the bore and see...well, very little. The U.S. of A. did some 1903-A3s with 2 groove, and reports indicated the accuracy was just as good as a 4 groove. Anyway---good for you! You have something of collector interest; not just one of the other 10 million made![^] (Just a guess on the 10 million!) 0 -
during and after ww2 the US used quite a few 2 grove barrels (m-1917, 03, m-1) all shot well. 0 -
The most accurate Enfield I ever owned was an old Golden State Arms sporterized #4. It had a 2 groove barrel and shot like a house afire! One of the worst decisions I ever made was selling that little number off!

I have no idea if this is correct, but a shop owner who had some 2 band Enfields for sale once told me the sole reason for the 2 band was to get rifles out quicker and cheaper during war-time. I'm not sure how that worked, but he believed it.
