Mauser....how to adjust the sights?
I pulled my old Mauser out, it is a 1941 stamped German Mauser. It's been a LONG time since I have fired this thing. If I am firing it at 100 yards, what do I set the sights to?

Well You sights are set in meters. 100 yds=91 meters. So If you are shooting at 100 yds I will put my sight on #1. Brownells sell extral tall front sight so you can file it down to the ammo that you use. Also do forget that the mauser(Soldier was trained to aim for the middle of the mass of the human target, which is the chest and stomach line) was design to hit the chest area, the ammo that you use may hit high on target, that what I found out.

I have a Czech mauser 98/22. The rifles lowest distance setting is 300 meters. I have to aim REALLY low to shoot well at 100 yards. My brother-in-law has a German K98. Now that one shoots better at 100 yards. Still high though..REAL HIGH.

Samadam165, I had the same problem with the 98/22. My thought is that the Czech use weak ammo.

The european mausers that I have seen had the rear sight graduated in meters-not yards. And if you will look at the markings you will find that the lowest setting possible on them are usually 200 meters. The europeans and US as well envisioned that fighting would mostly take place in europe and at longer ranges and therefore did not need a zero less than 200 meters. I have a 1903 and a 1903A3 and both of their rear sights will not adjust lower than 200 yards. If you want a 100 yard zero, you will have to get one of the taller front sights that Numerich Gun Parts, or Sarco, or one of the other parts places sell. Even then you might have to do a little careful filing to get the zero right. 0 -
I have a BRNO 1944 k98 mauser and If you put it on 1 and put aim just slightly below your target it should hit fine. Of course this depends on the ammo. I have about 5000 rounds of the Turkish surplus laying around I shoot through it. I have noticed that my czech 98/22 does shoot a bit higher over my German mauser. I think it is also due to the ammo difference ebtween the czech 8mm and the spitzer german round. 0 -
The lowest graduation on the rear sight of the Mauser is generally for a "point blank zero." Expect to be high at shorter ranges with a max height around 160 for 200M and 260 for 300M. Remember most military sights are for center mass so they will shoot somewhere within 8 inches of your initial aim point. For your zero you will have to note where to hold the front post in the blade while aiming. This will include left to right as all of the mauser sights I know of (not special peep sights) have no windage adjustments. On my first Yugo I had to hold the post halfway down the left side of the "v" in the blade to get 2" high center. My VZ-24 just went 8" high so I held the post bottom dead center. If you start shooting long ranges (all the way out to 2000M) just hold the post in the exact same spot as what gave you a center of aim (vertical) impact.
