"Best" Scope for Deer & Varmit, "Midpriced"

Ready to go out looking for a scope for a newly aquired Remington 700, in .243. Intended usage is for coyote calling and deer when in season. I am thinking of something around 6x-24x-50mm? but am open to suggestions and probably cannot afford a Leupold Vari-X II at present. What are your thoughts? Also, if I go with the higher powers for predators should I think of see-thru mounts and retaining the iron sights for closer shots?

    Why not go with the Leupold VX-1 in 3-9 or 4-12. Price is reasonable and quality is fine. I would not go with the see thru mounts but rather would go with the Weaver rings and bases so I could remove the scope and access the sights whenever desired.

    I think BSA is making a pretty good scope for a reasonable price. I think the Leupold suggestion is sound, but I consider them to be at the low end of the HIGHER price range; inexpensive, but certainly not affordable for your average Joe.

    Burris has, or had, a deal going where you could get their new ballistic plex 3x9x40, matte, with a 20x50 spotting scope thrown in for the total price of $199. I picked one up, the scope has been great and I was able to sell the spotting scope off for $50 at the auction site. This scope should do everything you want for both the song dogs and deer.

    With optics you get what you pay for. I think you would be well served to save a little longer and buy higher quality. 6x-24x is pretty high magnification for deer, I would second the 3x-9x or 4x-12x range as the best compromise in a dual purpose rifle. I consider Burris, Leupold and Nikon to be mid-prices scopes, but if I really HAD to go economy, Bushnell would be my choice.

    i have some nikon scopes that i like very well some are buckmasters
    4.5x14x40 with target turrets can get them here for around 280.00
    also got a nikon monarch 6.5x20x44 which i like very well but was around 450.00

    hear alot about the weaver scopes as being good also for the money and also the higher up bushnell scopes are good also...as are some others brands.

    I have one BSA scope and i hate it has the poorest glass i have seen in any scope
    on the see through mounts that up to you ......my personal preference is to have scope as close to bbl as possible to eliminate sighting errors at long distances jmho though

    I would also go for the Leupold 3-9x40 The 50 objective is not going to do you any good unless you go to a 30mm tube. A 1" tube can only let in so much light.
    I had a BSA that went bad on me, and I had to replace it. Your leupold goes bad, or gets broken whatever They fix or replace. Spend the Money. If you buy a leupold it hurts only once, If you buy some cheaper scope it's going to hurt every time you shoot it.REPEATABILITY !!!!

    For the dual purpose/distances you mentioned I would go with the 3.5-4 X 16 which seems to be getting very popular, for reasons like yours. I do agree, spend a little bit more and you will get far superior optics. But if you are looking for a knock around scope that you don't want to cry the first time you scratch it, I have a Tasco Premier World Class 4x16X40mm (silver color) mounted into a .308 Win. Ruger 77 stainless rifle that I have knocked the crap out of in all kinds of weathers and is still ticking in spite of a few scratches. I also have a similar setup with the Leupold scope, but I baby that one. EEnie, meenie, mynee, moe? Get them coydogs!
