Possibly a Stupid ?
I have a Ruger Security Six in 357 Magnum. I also have a Ruger Service Six in 38 Special. My question is can I take the cylinder off my Magnum and drop it into my 38 and safely fire Magnum ammo? Rugers come apart easy, and I positive it would fit, but would it be safe? The only difference in the two guns is one has fixed sights and of course the caliber. So is this doable? I THINK the only thing that would maybe keep this from being safe is if the cylinders are gun specific.

First, why would you want to? Second, I would not try it as you might end up causing damage to the gun or yourself or both.
Cylinders are usually fitted to the gun and timed to lock up properly. Changing cylinders might cause some damage even without firing. The .357 cylinder may be slightly longer and not fit in the .38 frame anyway.
The bottom line ...... it is NOT safe.

Thanks for the input. This was something I wasnt sure about, and surely would not try it without a lot of guys saying its doable. The reason I would like to do this is I really like the service six I have, and would really like it in magnum. The Security Six is in 6 inch barrel, and its a great shooter, but I like the 4 inch service six (38) better. Thanks for the replies.

There are enough +p and +p+ ammo choices for 38 spec. that you don't have to try and cobble two guns together to get very good performance out of your 38 and the Ruger design is tough enough to handle the loads. 
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0
