Does Colt still make a decent .45?

I am not trying to start a fight over .45's. Let me set the parameters of my querry. I am interested in a .45 auto to take along as a hunting "companion." The first and most important parameter is reliability. Accuracy is second. I am not looking for a competition pistol but would like a platform that would allow me to upgrade the pistol over the years if I feel the desire to do so. Third, cost. I don't want to pay $700 and up. I have found the Springfield Armory Mil Spec plain Jane .45 for around $500.00. Several acquaintances have said that if it doesn't have to be pretty just reliable, to give the Colt a look. What do you all think considering the parameters including price?

    Let em start out by saying I have no experiance with the Colt 1911A1. I have however, had the pleasure to run a few hundred rounds through a Remington Rand. If this licensed copy is anything like the original, I would go for it. The Springfields are'nt bad guns either, both will do just fine for you I think.

    If you look a little harder, you will find that Springfield for $400.

    Hello I stopped buying NEW colts when they stopped makeing series 70 That said I would avoid the series 80 if you ever want to build up the gun . the colt 1991a1 looks like it could be a good buy if they left out the fireing pin block. other than that I would go springfield or kimber The reason I don't like the series 80 is the fireing pin block works off the trigger instead of the grip safety Like the 1937 colt SWARTZ SAFETY or the KIMBER. quote:"PRAISE THE HARDBALL GUN"

    Sportsman's Warehouse has the base model Springfield for $389.
    That's at the new store in Round Rock,Texas(maybe a special since they just opened up.)
    They also have locations in Lewisville,Texas and Albuquerque,NM.

    Colt ,the finest unfinished firearm in the world

    People that have them swear buy them because that is what they have ,I have had several not one of them impressed me at any point ,not fit ,not finish ,not accuracy

    For MPinkston: Thanks. Someone recently told me the same thing. They said it had to do with quality control but I couldn't ascertain just what the problem was. For example, do they jam?

    For richbug: Thanks. I will do so. I do have a Colt but its a model 70 Mark IV from 1969 or around there. It shoots great. But, I don't want to take it out and beat around with it. I plan to leave it to my son. My dad left it to me.

    For Perry Shooter, Hey thanks for the great information. Now that you mention it, I seem to remember reading about that. I did discover that Colt makes a "new" series 70 model but man oh man is it expensive. GunTest Magazine really liked the Springfiled MilSpec. Also, I just read that the Colts have a magazine disconnect safety. Is that true of the Springfields and Kimbers?

    For BOBBYWINS: That is outstanding! Two of my daughters live in Fort Worth and my parents live in Henrietta near Witchata Falls. Are those places anywhere near there? Again, I appreciate the information.
