best soaking solovent

I just purchased a 1 gallon parts soaking bin. What would be the best solovent to put in this for soaking my gunparts. I don't want to buy something that is super expensive and i don't really want anything that is going to smell really bad becasue it will be in my basement.

    Try "Simple Green" first, it's non toxic. I've used it for years. Give it a try before useing the more toxic solvents in your home without proper ventilation, see if it works.

    Simple green will eventully eat alumiunm.
    But your in luck! Just recieved a brouchure from Kano Labs,
    makers of "KROIL".
    Been using it for over 20yrs, to clean suppressors & heavy weapons.
    Let your stuff soak overnight & you can wipe off any carbon, powder residue & also helps in cleaning the bores.
    The stuff is $23.90 per gal, with filtering with coffee filters that should last you at least 2 yrs.

    Will Kroil eat cosmoline?

    Does Kroil produce noxious or flammable fumes?

    What does kroil do to finfished parts Parkerizing, Blueing, Anodizing, ETC?

    I have used both Simple Green and Kroil for cleaning old mausers that I buy. Both do a good job, a good soaking over night in Kroil followed by a little use of a tooth brush and that all she wrote for grease, cosmolene, or for that matter it does a pretty good job of loosening up non-pitted surface rust. It will also do a good job on screws and bolts that are stuck-just soak for an hour or so and most will free up. I soak parts in Simple Green for about an hour or 2 followed by the tooth brush and rinsed in clean hot water, dried good with a dry cotton cloth or paper towel and then oil with Break Free. Just remember you MUST oil metal after cleaning in Simple Green because the metal is sqeaky clean after using Simple Green and must be re-oiled for protection-not so with Kroil. The Kroil does have a slight oil smell but not bad. The Simple Green has a really good odor-almost as good as some air fresheners.

    1. I have a Winchester Model 70 that was specially rebuilt, for 'work' at 400+ meters. It has a muzzle brake on the front end, and a mercury recoil reducer on the back end, plus a "mono-pod" on the back end from one the members of this board. As you might suspect it is chambered in 30-06.

    2. As you can tell from my profile, I am a teacher. More specifically I am trained as a wildlife game-biologist. At the "institution" I work in, they are very P.C., and most solvents are "No-No's" in the lab pre-room or in the labs. We use "Simple Green" concentrate in the 1 gallon containers. The stuff that went through the autoclave and needs attention can be placed in the "Simple Green" concentrate container. You do NOT have to use 'dish-washing' rubber gloves with it. You (and our student lab assistants) can 'bare-hand' it, with nothing more than a good hard bristle nylon tooth-brush. The smell is not bad at all, more like an air freshiner.

    3. Yes, at home I also have a 'soaking' container of 'Kroil'. It is one of the best penetrating oils that I know of. If it doesn't penetrate and break the threads free, then nothing will. The smell is obviously a petroleum product, but not too bad. I would not want to breathe it on a regular basis, nor would I handle parts in it without gloves. You must understand that I have 3 tractors and a bunch of implements such as plows, disk-harrows, roto-tillers, "bush-hogs" and finnishing mowers. Therefore I use LOTS of 'Kroil'.

    I use the Green stuff diluted about 1/4 to 1/2 with hot water unless the grease has become dried and hardened and then I use it full strength. Most of the time diluted works just fine.

    The Green Stuff (SIMPLE GREEN)can be found in most grocery or hardware stores, at least on the East coast.

    Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.
